Top 5 Australian batsman after Bradman.

Apologies to: Macartenay, Trumper, Walters (if only he could have had a decent tour of England!!!), Ponsford and Morris.
One name i'm suprised that hasn't been mentioned is Doug Walters, his record is up there with the best of them.
Love Dougie and agree with you about his record, except his abject failures on his tours of England, which are unfortunately a blemish on his record that moves him out of the very top bracket. I have him in my 2nd XI for alltime Australia still, and would have him in a heartbeat if I was picking a team to enjoy watching, rather than to win, or if the match was going to be in Australia, not England.

Good point. Let's not forget South Africa, whose attack at the moment I would say is not much worse than the one they had in the 90's when Donald was running around. Ntini is quite a magnificent bowler, and Pollock is an all-time great. Surely the 2 of them together equate Donald at the very least?
Pollock averaged 20 until 2001 - the first half of his career - and 27 ever since. Donald > Ntini, easily. That said, the difference between the two decades is overrated.

You still have to score the runs, and Ponting has done that far better and far more consistently than any other player in the last 6 or 7 years.
Did anyone ever claim that he hasn't been the best batsman in the world in the last 6 or 7 years?

No, But 33 Centuries and 9000+ runs @ 60 is awesome, no matter who you played against and IMO he will end up as the second best Aussie batsman after Sir Don.

Uhh, yes it does matter who you played against. Many achievements are "awesome" - whether Ponting is "awesome" or not isn't being debated here. The key here is that Ponting's opposition in this decade has been weaker than in the previous decade, but not as weak as some may believe.

On the other note, yes he may go on to become the 2nd best Aussie batsman ever. Right now, it's Chappell IMO.

Hmm...

Greg Chappell definately 2nd, little doubt there IMO.

Border and Stephen Waugh would probably be tied for 3rd and 4th place really, I've always found it hard to separate them.

Morris or Harvey probably 5th, or maybe Douglas Walters.
Who is your 1st?

Mine:

1. G. Chappell
2. Ponting*
3. Harvey
4. Waugh
5. Border

*Ponting will overtake Chappell, I am sure.

If we were to give 5 votes to the 1st place, 4 to the second etc on everyones lists (inc the ones that say awta and only 5 for Chappell in Richard's list as that's the only one he gives a definitive for), unofficially we would come up with this top 5 so far (from 15 entries):

Chappell - 59
Harvey - 42
Ponting - 34
Waugh - 32
Border - 18

No one else has achieved this decade what Ponting has. I'd say his feats are indeed awesome.

For me the first four pick themselves -

G.Chappell
Border
Waugh
Ponting
(even when you take into account the percieved weakness of opposition for Ponting compared to Chappell, Waugh (in the 90's) and Border I still believe he deserves a mention)

For the fifth position more than 10 names could be tossed about - Harvey, Simpson, Lawry, Walters, Hayden, Langer, O'Neil, Vic Trumper (for his status as somewhat of a pioneer of Aussie batsmanship more so than his numbers), Ponsford, Hassett, hell if you go by numbers even Martyn, Boon, Morris, Ian Chappell, Dean Jones, Mark Waugh would come into the equation.

I'll go for Harvey (even thought I dont like him!), for scoring over 20 hundreds in 79 tests before covered wickets were brought it.

Which makes my list identical to pretty much everyone elses lol

This is a common problem Richard when different age groups discuss cricket..Unfortunately some people can only relate to what they have seen and sometimes too young to comprehend the differences in the game and how it has evolved. In another thread on this site I made mention of Peter Burge and no one had heard of him yet he played for Australia for a good 10 years.

This is not meant as an insult to their knowledge just an observation I have ascertained over time.
