I think your over-rating Mark Butcher just slightly tbh.
Butcher > Strauss, Collingwood, and, right now, Bell.

Forgot to mention Stewart, I might add. :nono: He >>>>>>> Prior and I'd be astounded if it doesn't stay that way.
What are you suggesting England do?
Not sure, TBH, there's not a lot that can be done.

Ideally, though, we'd have some more pitches like this so we find-out the truths better and easier.

DWTA really. Especially Bell.
I'm as big a fan of Bell as most people and feel some (Beevs especially, though that's probably more to do with the fact he's often in contest with Collingwood for a place) give him plenty of unfair stick.

Nonetheless, he's never yet played the sort of innings a player with his game should be capable of - standing around while all others are falling. He's either cashed-in on rubbish attacks (which he should be doing, and good on him for making the most of them) or benefited from let-offs aplenty against better bowling.

Butcher, in his career, played the hard knocks many times, even if he also had one horrendous trot that lasted the best of 2 years.

Yeah England should bring back Crawley, Butcher, Ramprakash and Hick tbh. Just keep Cook and Peitersen.
You certainly wouldn't mind the 1993-1995 Hick now, but then again we wouldn't have minded him in the next 5 years too.

Crawley, as I say, never convinced many (including me) in Tests, though undoubtedly his ending was unjust; and Butcher and Ramprakash's time has probably passed now, though pending Butcher's deeds in FC cricket this season (which I'm unaware of) I'd not be at all sorry to see him get another chance right now.

Wouldn't, however, bet on him taking it, as he's getting on a bit these days.

How about his fantastic twin 50's in the 05 Series which made his overall performance in the series better then Harmison? :)

Was let-off in at least the first of them (possibly in the 2nd too) but being better than Harmison who did pretty much nothing isn't hard.

Oh Rich. Its about 5-6 in England now and in nigh on 3 in the morn here in Aus. So when I wake up, I hope to see some explaining.

I know averages aren't everything, but Buthcer, Hussain, Atherton, Stewart and others average signifcantly less than their counterparts of tday. Why are they better? Is it the heart that they show?

And Butcher? I still don't understand why you rate him so highly. He was absolutely dreadful for the first 50 games of his career. (Were you bickering about how he should of been dropped after 10 tests and this that and the other). In my opinion, Butcher was a companion for 50 odd tests.

^ I'm totally serious about that, I'm about to knock off soon and I'd like a good Sunday morning read. (The paper is terrible in Aus).

Also, is cricinfo working for you folks?
