 @ the previous page. That video.....In any case Sanath is not the best ODI player ever . Can't quite tell you who but he's in contention. Saying that, he isn't the best.

Interesting ..... does the rating take the "Strike Rate" in to account ? Also how about "not outs" ?

Yeah, the batting rating does include strike-rates. Not outs are just a part of the average, which is also counted.

I will post the batting and bowling ratings one day.

Of course, Garner should be in there, but because he didn't score 500 runs, then he hasn't got a batting rating. So the list above is not really representative of how I rate those players.

When I think ofthe greatest ODI players Pollock really never came to my mind. Wonder how the ratings were weighted. Eventhough he is a fantastic ODI bowler.

Off the top of my head I think the ratings should consider in addition to the normal stats

Batting Strike Rate (Its as important the manner in which you scored the runs in ODI's)
Also the MOM & Man of the series ratio
What % of matches has the team Won when the batsman scores 50, 100 (3wkts, 4 wks, 5wkts)
Bowling Strike rate ect .....

My individual batting and bowling ratings both include strike rates.

Pollock has a batting strike-rate of over 80 and a bowling E/R of under 3.8. Outstanding contributor to his team.

I Just had a quick look at the stats for pollock Vs Jayasuriya MOM and Man of The Series awards

Pollock - 287Matchers 20 MOM(6.97%) + 8 MOS 2.79%) = 9.76%

Jayasuriya - 398Matchers 45 MOM(11.31%) + 11 MOS(2.77%) = 14.08 %

This is a huge component of how great ODI player is. How many matchers and how frequent has the Individual turned games on its head and won for his team ?

Like my previous post

Based on the stats above IMHO

Jayasuriya >>> Pollock

Yup, I can see the argument for Jayasuriya being the best ODI player ever...as an all rounder.

But the reason I quoted the above is... ppl think he's a hack, yet he's one of three it seems to achieve the unique feat.

Back to Jayasuriya, I think his 'number of matches played' has a big significance on the wickets and runs scored... Scoring the most runs ever doesn't mean you're the best ever.

However I believe he's HIGHLY under-rated, and is a VERY VERY VERY good ODI cricketer, right up there, but not the best. I can see your point however.

Have To Agree ...... Pollock no where near the all-timegreatest ODI player as Sanath, SRT, Akram

I'd definitely have "Benevolent Uncle Sanath" down as one of the great ODI players...but the best? Not sure.

He's been the epitome of the hit-and-miss player -- taking attacks apart one day, failing the next. But the highs have been so high that you could safely ignore the lows.

Stats don't always tell the truth, and the fact that Jayasuriya played so many matches means that he'd be bound to rack up the runs and wickets eventually. Mind you, such a long career is testament to his class and dedication -- I think he's meant to be one of the fittest SL squad members, even now, in much the same way that the mid-30s Alec Stewart kept fitter than his 20-something teammates.

Still, I think I'd put Wasim above him. Sir Viv too. Can't think of anyone else right now, though.

I'll never forget the story of how, after winning an Audi A4 (or something like that) for being the '96 WC's best player, Jayasuriya went straight out and got it fitted with some tasteful leopard-print seat covers. Nice ;)

Sanath definitely a legend. And one of the all time greats of ODI cricket along side, Wasim Akram , Waquar, Sachin, Azharuddin, Kapil, Ponting , Hayden, Gilchrist, Kallis, Pollock, Bond, Styris ....

SL will be all the more poorer when he retires.

If only we could keep him going for another 20 years .....:)

And BTW, welcome back Legglancer...Another Sri Lankan on the forum adds to our might here ...

Does Hayden now count after his World Cup efforts and Scott Styris, he's good, that is about as dire as putting Kevin Pietersen in an all-time English Test XI when he has only been playing Test cricket for two years.
