Why? It's a match between two also-rans. No matter who wins, they're not going to have an impact on the finals, unless Adelaide get all their matches at AAMI Stadium.

No one's 'happy' to finish 15-16th, but as far as long term success goes, it's far better for a non-premiership contender to finish that low and get a top 5 draft pick than to finish between 8-10. As neither Melbourne nor Essendon are premiership contenders, I'd rather my team be in Melbourne's position than Essendon's.

It may well have worked for Carlton were it not for their well publicized draft penalties. Goddard and Wells (iirc) would certainly make a fair difference to the resurgence of Carlton. And Richmond have been largely 9-11 since '00 (with the exception of '04 and last year), and have never really gone into anything remotely resembling a rebuilding phase.
