****kkkkkk, I'm in love with the North Melbourne football club, what a ****ing side. Everyone works so hard for eachother, no passengers. ****kk, best game for a while, so goooooooood.

I actually saw part of an AFL game for the first time since I started tipping in the CW comp last night. I thought Sentanta had all the UK rights, but no: British Eurosport 2 showed hightlights of Geelong/Collingwood (think it's repeated tonight too for any curious UK based Sky users).

It largely satisfied my "badly-haircutted Victorians in tragically 80s-esque kit punting the ball in an arbitrary manner" stereotype, but I do have one serious question: what's the law on handling the ball on the floor? Whenever it seemed to hit the deck about half a dozen players piled in & almost invariably the ref (umpire?) blew up. Can players literally wrestle each other for the ball or it it like union when the ball must be released?

It's sort of like Union in that if a player is deemed to be caught "holding the ball" when they've had prior opportunity to release the ball, the opposition receives a free kick. However in the case where the ball is on the ground underneath a pack, unless one of the players drags the ball back in (in which case it would be a free kick against that player), if the ball has no chance of being released, the umpire will take the ball and have a bounce (like at the start of each quarter, or after a goal is kicked).

Will West Coast make the 8?

Sydney the the dogs at the dome in the next 2 weeks. Im tipping they'll slip out of the 8.

Any further questions on the rules of the game should be directed to the resident field umpire... me!!
