No surprise that Collingwood has been made captain, especially after KP effectively pulled out of the race. I am disappointed to see Monty Panesar and Michael Yardy in the squad, while I can't say too much about Shah, Prior and Sidebottom as I'm not aware of their credentials but I imagine it is a reward in the case of the latter two players who performed so well in the Test series.

Absolutely delighted to see Jonathon Trott in the mix, he is a very good batsman who will add great value to the team. Cook will get a chance to prove himself in the ODI arena and I'm ecstatic that Strauss and Vaughan missed the cut as well.

Haha, I guess being a fan of Vincent and Katich means I like all 'mediocre' players...such as Yardy.

With all due respect to Yardy, his batting technique and his bowling action both resemble something you'd find at your local mental hospital. However, he does deserve another go, purely on the virtue of how effective his bowling was last time for the most part, and the fact that he batted criminally high and hence didn't get a full chance to show what he could offer with the blade.

He's absolutely horrible to watch and I think he'll probably fail, but you can't fault the selection *too* much given his record with the ball in ODIs to date.

Yardy looks like crap, but his economy rate and average are pretty good. Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and are all pretty good batsman and he has taken their wickets in ODI cricket. As people have said, he was batting much too high during his first stint and there is no way he should have come anywhere near the top 5, even batting at #6 was probably not ideal.

BTW what happened to that other mediocre spin bowling all rounder. Did he get dropped for Yardy or is he injured. Trott looks decent, could be a find if he preforms near his List A stats.

Jamie Dalrymple? He has had a pretty average season for Middlesex, averaging 32.60 with the bat and hasn't really had much of a bowl.

I was just thinking since Richard has pushed so hard for the inclusion of Dimitri Mascarenhas, will he come up with excuses if he fails and goes for quite a few runs? Not to say that Richard would do that sort of thing, but he doesn't seem the kind to cop it on the chin if one of the players whose inclusion he has pushed for proves to be garbage.

To be honest, I'm willing to bet that he would. It's only natural really - if you think a player is good enough and he performs poorly, then you'd naturally look for reasons why it is the case.

With all the injuries i'm fairly pleased with some of the new selections. Mascarenhas selection especially is very good since i've been calling for his selection for all long as i've been a CW member so hopefully he will come good.

Bit short of bowling there NZTailender. 6 bowlers needed in ODIs.(five plus extra needed in case of injury or another bowler having a bad day)

Bell would be better in the middle order against the spinners as he finds it hard to use the powerplays and likes giving bowlers maidens, also a candidate for nick to slips early on when the slips are still there.

Regarding Yardy: there's no point in selecting a squad without a second spinner in it. Who else would you have gone for - Ian Blackwell, Adil Rashid or Gareth Batty?

Yardy's bowling action is unorthodox, yes, but it's not 1,609,344km away from Sanath Jayasuriya and he's proven the worth of flat, niggly left-arm spin in short cricket more times than I've had microwaved lasagne. Whether he can bat is less relevant for me: but I don't think he's an ODI four...
