Where to for NZ cricket in the next few years?

I would be very surprised if he's still playing at 37 given the strain his type of bowling puts on his body and given his history of injuries
As would I, that's why I said "if he keeps fit" that he could still possibly play until he is 37.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Playing favourites:

1. C Cumming - Was solid against the Sri Lankans, and deserves another test. He's 'old' but I believe he can provide a good service a the top of the order until a younger opener bashes the door down.
2. M Papps - Better than How IMO and could be a good long term option if he can put in some good performances. If he can stay injury free and isn't mucked about by coaches, he could be great for us.
3. S Syris - Has a phoenomenal record at 3 and a prolonged run there could bring out the best in him and a 40+ average. Handy part time bowler.
4. L Vincent - Yeah, I'm biased but his record here is pretty solid. Plays pace and spin well so an ideal position for him.
5. S Fleming - Don't think we should expose him as an opener or number 3 (given that our openers have a record of falling within the first 5 overs in recent tests). Could basically be our Chanderpaul here at 5.
6. R Taylor - Definitely has earned a call up, in my books. Can he bat with the tail, though? IMO yes given that our tail has scored more runs than the top in recent times. Will make centuries here, but not big ones. Will move further up when Fleming retires.
7. B McCullum - Pretty self explanitory.
8. J Franklin - IMO, could be a fine test number 8 with the ability to score a few 50's and the occasional hundred. His bowling, while sometimes erratic, can be effective in tests given his low strike rate.
9. D Vettori - See McCullum.
10. M Gillespie - Has some pace and apparently some accuracy (haven't seen him play FC). Despite this, I'd rank him ahead of Mills in the longer format as I think he has a) more in the tank and b) would be able to adapt his bowling well to the situation.
11. S Bond - If he's bloody fit. Mills would come in for him otherwise.

12th man: J Patel. Straight swap in for Gillespie on subcontinent.

Why do people continue to leave out Jacob Oram? The guy has a fantastic record as a batsman in Test cricket and has the ability to bowl quite a few overs, sure he is slightly injury prone but as of late he has been pretty good.

I agree. He's got very respectable test figures and fills 2 roles in the team

Hasn't Styris got a 100 @ 3 batting against England? My only concern would be how he handles the new ball.

And on the subject of Bond, the guys so damn good it would be unfair if he didn't get a fair run of 3-5 years mainly injury free. He could be an all time great IMO if he had the opportunity. Of course cricket is rarely fair to NZers when it comes to seamers fitness.

The reason I left him out of my team is that compared to other batsmens current form he misses out on a spot. Of course this is NZ we are talking about so there will be a few in me and NZtailenders 11's that will get injured, opening up a spot for Oram.

Styris got 2 of his 5 test tons batting at 3....v India at Mohali 2003/04 and England at Nottingham in 2004

OK, thanks Fiery.

In that case then....

Michael Papps
Jamie How
Scott Styris
Stephen Fleming
Peter Fulton
Lou Vincent
Brendan McCullum
James Franklin
Daniel Vettori
Kyle Mills
Shane Bond

If it were my favourite players then I would pick

Jamie How
Peter Ingram
Matthew Sinclair
Greg Hay
Stephen Fleming
Ross Taylor
Jacob Oram
Brendan McCullum
James Franklin
Jeetan Patel
Shane Bond

Has a very CD look doesn't it?:p (Well the batting anyway)

EDIT: I almost forgot Flem, how could I? =(

He's in for Fulton then, even though Fulton is awesome and will be an excellent batsman for us in the future.

I would have Oram ahead of Vincent

Scott Styris has an amazing record at #3 with 284 runs @ 142.00 with two centuries and a fifty. Batting at #3 he has come in at 231/1, 34/1, 163/1 and 34/1. He hasn't really had the opportunity to prove himself against the new ball batting at #3 because both times he has tonned up the openers have set a solid platform.

Considering that New Zealand aren't playing a Test match until November then I don't think current form has much to do with it. Besides, the only form that these players have is in ODI cricket from the recent CB series, Chappell-Hadlee and World Cup in which Jacob Oram performed quite credibly.

Is there a thread anywhere on what we think the NZ team will look like in 5 years. I think there'll be some interesting opinions based on this thread.

Vincent for one of the openers with Fulton at 3 followed by Styris, if RT underperforms at 6 then Oram gets in and yes also Gillispie<<<Mills.
