Boulevard Bombers v Jamee's Crew
at CWBCC Stadium
Scorecard
Ball By Ball
After cruising towards a low total of 218, Jamee's crew fell apart to Matt Luff and David Pares' bowling, and the Bombers snitched an 18-run win. Batting first on a tricky CWBCC Stadium wicket turned out to be a wise choice, despite losing all openers in single digits.
Pickup impressed with the new ball, extracting plenty of bounce as Rose, Pares and McNamara all failed to exploit the fielding restrictions, and he emerged with figures of three for 40, including dangerman Butler lbw for 14. Luff and Wilshere were forced to rebuild, and did so with a partnership worth 88, ended by another international bowler, Liam Camps. Camps offered the only other real threat, though excellent fielding resulted in two run outs and kept the target down to 218 for the crew.
Gelman and Dunn kept things tight early on, but it was Halsey who got the first breakthrough, removing both openers to bring Kerr and Wilson together in the middle. The two batted with eyes on the target until the 35th over, when Luff's medium pace was brought on as sixth change. Seam movement was prominent enough to evade the bats of Wilson and Kerr, who were locked in the chase of precious milestones, and when Wilson cut to Gelman at point, the team could no longer hold together. In nine overs, Kerr, Wilson and Loganathan gathered only twenty meagre runs, and a barrage of perfect yorkers from Pares and Thomas concluded the disaster. The crew had lost their last eight wickets for 33, in the feeblest capitulation seen on the globe since April 7, 1940.
Boulevard Bombers 217 for eight
MD Luff 66, BL Wilshere 55; NS Pickup 3-40, LA Camps 2-44
Jamee's Crew 199 all out (48 overs)
WA Kerr 68, MW Wilson 51; DPW Pares 4-13, GM Thomas 2-20, TC Halsey 2-28
Boulevard Bombers won by 18 runs
Man of the Match: M. D. Luff (Bombers)
Crampton's XI v Suit up!
in PDV Dome
Scorecard
Ball By Ball
In a clash of two full-strength elevens, Suit up! struggled with the lack of a proper fourth- and fifth-change bowler, and failed to take advantage of an excellent starting position brought to them by good pace bowling from Mitchell, Gough and Fuller. However, a masterfully executed chase gave Mitchell's team a six-wicket victory.
Opting to bat first, Crampton's team fell into trouble immediately as Rob Malone left his son stranded for two early on in the game. A typical hostile spell from Gough at one end brought no usual early wickets, and it was Mitchell who struck first, having Bugs senior caught behind on 19 before Gough removed the new man Kearsley. Fuller continued the good trend of quick bowling for wickets, cramping up Garven who feebly gloved behind for eight.
At 65 for four, Crampton saw the danger and went on the defensive. The next nine overs brought 28 runs; however, poor return spells from Gough as well as inaccurate stuff from the various part-timers employed made the batsmen get away with it. Gough returned to take a final wicket, captain Crampton for a slow but vital 68, while Richards hogged the strike and left Scott stranded on 99 not out, with two taken off the final ball.
Watt brought an immediate breakthrough, landing one short of a length to have Mørk caught at third slip for a two-ball duck. The opening overs were intriguing viewing, as Smith and Jasotharan hung on dearly to their wickets while Watt and Wright speared in from either end. However, once again the change bowlers failed to apply the pressure. After both batsmen had reached hard-earned fifties, the batting team required 116 from 20 overs, and despite a very good second spell from Josh Forner to remove Jasotharan and Das, Ritchie and Lezama lashed out boundaries at will, including two $10,000-worth sixes, and got home with 16 balls to spare.
Crampton's XI 233 for five (50 overs)
NG Scott 99*, AJ Crampton 68; KJ Gough 2-46
Suit up! 234 for four (47.4 overs)
DP Smith 68, S Jasotharan 52, ZJ Ritchie 45*, A Lezama 40*; JNE Forner 2-50
Suit up! won by six wickets
Man of the Match: A. Lezama (Suit)
Bronx Cheerers v R. G. E. W. S. Cribb's XI
at CW Oval
Scorecard
Ball By Ball
No one got off the mark for Bronx, who were restricted to 173 after the top six simply failed to score anywhere. The batsman to emerge with credit was Heath Davis, who struck boundaries and at least attempted to hit some ball towards the end of the innings. And despite suicidal efforts from the top order, it is difficult to defend 173 against such accomplished one-day batsmen as James Stedman and Rob Dauth, who put on a magnificent show for the fifth wicket.
Opening the bowling with spin worked well for the Cribb eleven; though Weber was expensive and chucked a couple of balls down leg, he did take the wicket of Clapham, bringing Borcich and Corrin together. Both were sluggish, leaving balls from Gaukroger, Thompson and Cunningham well alone, and it took till the 26th over before the second wicket fell, with the score at 84. Cribb and Donald picked it up well, with Donald having Sharma caught at point and Corrin inside edging Cribb for a 76-ball 32; Davis swished at everything, with occasional results, and ended up with 25 before a meek edge found Ethan McNamara.
Incredibly, there were two maiden overs at the death, bowled by Nayak and Donald, and even the eighth-wicket stand of Bennett and Cameron wasn't much cop. And with Dwyer and Bennett conceding 46 in eight overs to a rampant opening partnership, the game looked over. Fourteen balls later and there was a flicker of hope; Dwyer, Bennett, Cameron and Corrin had all taken a wicket each, largely due to expansive strokemaking, and getting Stedman would be crucial. However, both Cameron and Corrin worked too hard at it, pitching the ball too full or too short and duly getting punished. Borcich and Sharma did not have more success, and the carnage ended in the thirtieth over, Stedman pulling his tenth boundary to end with an unbeaten 83.
Bronx Cheerers 173 for seven (50 overs)
RGEWS Cribb 2-17, DP Towns 2-24, EAP McNamara 1-9
R. G. E. W. S. Cribb's XI 177 for four (29.3 overs)
JE Stedman 83*, RJ Dauth 65*
R. G. E. W. S. Cribb's XI won by six wickets
Man of the Match: J. E. Stedman (Cribb)
