The race heated up for the Manuel Ramprakash Challenge Trophy, as Cricket Web Red took on Cricket Web Blue at the CW Oval in search of the top spot in the league. What transpired was the stuff of legend. In one of the most incredible comebacks in Dev League cricket, CW Red rose from the ashes of seeming defeat and made a dominant press for victory in the final four sessions of the match.
In the first innings, and after batting first, the Reds were stunned and undone by the effectiveness of Rhys Williams, spinning the ball on an untainted pitch and taking 3 wickets to rock the top and middle order. Ever steadfast, Haakon Moerk batted on for 85 as the anchor to a moderate score of 271. CW Blue functioned well as a team, with the varied attack posing many problems for the Red batsmen over the innings. Such a competitive total can largely be attributed to lower order though, as the Reds, led by Chris Dwyer's 50, put on 110 for the final 4 wickets.
The boost of confidence gained in such a recovery was immediately transferred to the ball. Kennett searched and found the edge of Thamba Mamesh with the first ball he bowled to him, granting a catch to Bennett at fourth slip. The fast bowler then followed up by bowling Jack Ullungura for 14 to place CW Red on top. Pete Young (67) and Robert Cribb (74) threatened then with a partnership of 96, but the middle order faded so quickly after Young's demise. CW Blue collapsed from 133-2 to 215 all out and CW Red gained a lead of 56, healthy in such a tight game. Starring with the ball was Kennett, who grabbed 5 for 58 to lead a weakened attack with poise.
The Reds looked to be throwing away their advantage quickly when it came their turn with the bat. Demeza and Collins removed Moerk and Sharma with a burst at the top - 8 for 2 - but Kenny Dobson and David Kearsley rebuilt in steady resistance. As Dunn broke that partnership of 113, a brace of wickets rocked CW Red. Some 3 wickets fell for 2 runs in the initial burst, and CW Red were in tatters at 132-6 when Reddlapalli was caught at mid-on off Williams. It was at that point of struggle that the lower order made one of the most incredible stands the sport has seen.
Dwyer led the charge, counterattacking dutifully in mounting his second first-class hundred of the season. It was a brilliant, if chancy display, and worthy of as much praise as is to be levelled on an innings of 142 runs from 189 balls. At the other end of the spectrum of revival, Robbins was solid and chanceless to gather a century of his own, his first this season. But as the crowning achievement, with the bowlers already run ragged and the game out of reach of CW Blue, Callum Thompson clobbered and thwacked his way to 113 from 92 balls and a subsequent declaration. When Robbins and Dwyer were united, CW Red led by 188 runs with 4 wickets in hand. For the fall of 3 more wickets, and by the time Moerk called the display to a close, CW Red had set a target of 573.
The stench of impending defeat could have been worsened for CW Blue, but for Moerk missing a half-chance at dishing Mamesh a king's pair. Yet the CW XI opener only got to 17, then edged to gully, where Kearsley boasted safe hands. Ullungura joined Young and the two set about to occupy the crease and build a platform toward an unlikely draw. They resumed their vigil on day five at 99-1, and admirably batted through the morning session to 158-1. Ullungura offered one chance on 48, but Thompson could not cling on, and both batsmen reached half-centuries before the interval. The afternoon session was another exercise in patience, as the partnership took the shape of 150. Desperate for a wicket, Moerk sent Reddlapalli around the wicket, and Young flicked into the hands of legslip. He was out for 91 and visibly furious at his manner of dismissal. Even so, CW Blue managed to reach tea with 8 wickets still intact.
Ullungura raised a fine hundred against a workmanlike Bennett, then was caught by the same man off Robbins soon after. Out for 104, Ullungura's dismissal opened a door for the Reds, even with just 16.1 overs remaining in the game. Moerk turned to spin at both ends, bringing Dwyer into the attack, and they grabbed the wickets of Wilshere, Bowen and Cribb in quick time. Then with 7.3 overs remaining, Williams joined Fuller in an attempt to hang on. Kennett returned to the attack and was fired up, but ineffective. The batsmen denied the bowlers with some confidence, ending the game a draw.

The celebrations were intense and rightly so, as Cricket Web Black finally closed off a game after impressive batting allowed a dominant declaration. There were nerves with the bat, but the Blacks successfully chased 85 to achieve a victory of some quality, guided there by the 34 of Gerard Armstrong. They lost 5 wickets along the way, but crucially completed the job.
Smith would not have been quite as happy earlier in the game, as his bowlers let CW Green escape from the uncertainty of 86-3 after choosing to bowl first. Garven and Dubb-Lynch scored classy half-centuries, and largely by their merit, CW Green scored 361 all out. There were steady contributions all the way down the order, denying a generally impressive Black outfit of seven bowlers.
The response posed by CW Black would not soon be forgotten by the CW Green bowlers. Smith was dropped on 5, 43 and 48, while Arnold attacked without such chancy disregard. The pairing was still brutally effective, and the opening stand grew to measures of 206. Arnold was finally out to Josh Forner, but Smith continued undaunted (though dropped once more) with keen support from the middle order. He raised his bat in celebration of another first-class ton - his third this season - then batted on past the 150 mark with relative ease. The ball was thrown to Corrin, and finally there was relief for the Greens. The legspinner flighted to Smith, and the Black captain holed out to long-off for 187, and at 378-3. Corrin pouched Armstrong with a low full toss and a leading edge, then Andy Cameron bowled Donald for 23.
The Greens surged back into contention when Cameron got Gelman for 6, but that allowed Dave Richards to the crease, set for the finest performance of his career. Not once, on his way to 50 from 72 balls, did Richards looked uncertain or bothered. And his fluency only improved as he moved to 79 by the end of day three. On the fourth morning the Green bowlers improved in accuracy and resolve, but sure enough, Richards reached an excellent hundred with a straight drive down the ground. The Blacks pressed on a bit longer, passing 600 for that extra psychological boost, and declared at 607-9, leading by 246.

They had five sessions at their disposal and an enormous lead, but failed so many times previously this season to attain a win in similar circumstances. As CW Green moved to 72-0, those concerns would have been amplified. Richards then offered a lifeline with the ball, as much as he was sublime with the bat. Gelman grabbed a sharp chance close in to remove Malone for 40, and Donald followed up with the wicket of Scott for 5. The same pairing of bowlers accounted for Garven and Corrin early in the evening session, leaving CW Green struggling at 92-4. Smith continued a poor game with the gloves, dropping Lezama on 33, and the opener went on to spend 82 more balls at the crease.
Dubb-Lynch promised again with 41 from 56 balls, but was out to Borcich late in the final session. And as a final action of their dominance, the Blacks removed Lezama for 52 just before stumps, ironically caught well by Smith. CW Green entered the last day of the game still trailing by 46 runs and with only 4 wickets in hand. Still, the Blacks had little room to err with overconfidence, and Cunningham made sure they knew it, blasting 50 from 41 balls. The allrounder continued his onslaught for a further 141 balls. He scored 136 not out of a total of 330, giving CW Green something at all to bowl at. The spin of Richards claimed 5 wickets in the innings, ensuring a Man of the Match award upon a CW Black victory.
Andy Cameron jangled some nerves with four wickets with the new ball, but the total was too small for CW Green to truly mount a defence. A partnership of 30 between Armstrong and Donald put the result out of the question, then Gelman joined Armstrong to secure it.

Fair comeback there from Reds and im sure i dropped a few catches to help them out.
