Possibly, but he is right. There's no country called the West Indies & yet they play tests.

As for England not being a country: pah.
What I mean is to compare England to Yorkshire in the non-country stakes is pedantic.

Neither is England, actually.

And neither is Ireland as a whole in which its cricket team competes.
England is. And so is Ireland but Northern Ireland which is kind of. ok scrap the country and go with nation. Windies isn't a country but is a nation and so is ireland, i don't think Yorkshire is a separate nation. Most of to play as a team you have to have a board and apply to the ICC to be a member so if Northern Ireland had a separate board and broke away from Ireland like as in soccer they could be a separate member. Ireland is kind of like it was with East Africa etc right now.

Northern Ireland is a nation but England, Scotland etc are constituent country, "which a number of countries make up a larger entity or grouping".

Hahahaha. So it'd be better to walk in and say "all you Irish ****s are outlaws, fiends, rogues, scoundrels and basically in no way fit whatsoever to mingle with us Brits"?

I think not, somehow.
A question for you richard, have you ever seen the episode of south park called "smug alert", because that's the kind of image i'm getting of you right now, smelling your own farts and talking with your eyes closed. You seem to be a stereotypical pompous asshole, who believes that he know's everything. OF COURSE THAT WOULDN'T BE BETTER!!! That would get the **** kicked out of you because you're insulting the country, and saying how "the irish are one of us" would also get the **** kicked out of you because for 300 years Britain occupied Ireland, where the Brittish owned all the land and the irish were the poor peasants who were never allowed to own land, and alot of Irish people bear a grudge against English people, and that's mainly because of people like you. The smart thing would be to just put up and shut up

Damn straight.
I get **** all the time for being english over here because bastards constantly think it's still the 60's and can slate the irish and have the law protect them.

Geography.com > Wikipedia, as a source of what is a country and what isn't, TBH.

England is commonly known and thought of as a country, but technically isn't as it doesn't meet all the criteria.

it's a country which is part of the united kingdom.
You can't just make up your own rules though. The criteria for qualifiying as a country is very clear. All must be met:

1. Has space or territory that has internationally recognised boundaries.
2. Has people who live there on an ongoing basis.
3. Has economic activity and an organized economy. A country regulates foreign and domestic trade and issues money.
4. Has the power of social engineering, such as education.
6. Has a government that provides public services and police power.
7. Has sovereignty. No other State should have power over the country's territory.
8. Has external recognition. A country has been "voted into the club" by other countries.

England most certainly fails on #4, #7 and #8. A few of the others are debatable as well, but it definitely fails on those three.

Source for criteria.

Not all countries are recognized by all the other countries. Taiwan is a country but not everybody recognizes it.

Taiwan is not a country then, as it doesn't meet all the criteria. Is this really such a hard concept?

Whether it actually is accepted though is debatable as it has external recognition in 25 countries. In fact, the issue is debated on the same site.

England is most certainly not a country though as there are at least three criteria which is clearly does not meet.

But #8 is debatable too since a lot of countries are recognized by some but not by others. Just look at Israel, we recognize it and so does most other countries but the middle east and africa doesn't. It's still a country.

For #7 it's like the all the countries which is part European Union etc i think.

And I don't get #4. They don't have education?

Yes, but Israel is part of the UN. The UK is part of the UN, but England isn't in itself.

FBU, grant28, jammay123, PhoenixFire, shortpitched713, Trigger_Tiger
Trigger_Tiger votes as overhyped kind of supprised me as Bangladesh not so long ago was at the same state kind of. But anyways I don't get why anyone would say they were overhyped. Bangladesh (and kenya to some extent) out of the bottom 8 was hyped to may be cause upset and to Bangladesh's credit they lived up to the hype but most people didn't even know Ireland and they did what no one though they could do, hardly any hype involved there.

It has external recognition. Just not by all countries. England does not have external recognition at all.

No it isn't, actually. All those countries still have state sovereignty. England does not.

And I don't get #4. They don't have education?
Oh they do, but they don't actually have power of it.

I don't see why I'm arguing the matter really - I've pointed out an excellent source. that proves my point already.
