***Official** Sri Lanka v Pakistan in Abu Dhabi

Not Terrible
"who according to chief selector Asantha de Mel "bowls at a good pace and has an unusual action like Lasith Malinga and troubles batsmen often."

Oh my. Another one?

FFS why hell is Prasanna Jayawardene in the squad, what does Silva have to do. :@

Nice to see Warnapura, Kapugedara, Lokuarachchi, Amarasinghe get a run. A bit disappointed that Perera gets a run ahead of Ganegama. Never heard much about Amarasinghe being able to bowl a raw pace with an unusal action, even from Colts fans. Mind they seem to keep these things quite until they make the national team, to not build too much pressure on them at domestic and A Level.

Moody hasn't quit and should make a decision at the end of the series. Pakistan have an interim guy that was going in the WC from memory.

Oh... ok, so is Moody interested to stay with Sri Lanka or does that depend on what sort of money Sri Lankan cricket board offers Moody.

Depends if he wants the challenge or not, cus he would get paid more in WA then what SLC can offer. So if only about money with Moody he will be out door pretty soon. He will get a decent wage however at Sri Lanka, just not as much as WA, or an English job.

Can't see why Ruchira Perera gets picked.. the guy is absolute waste.

Ashantha De Mel seems to have some hatred for Zoysa.

Apart from that the Team looks good. I think it was a bit disappointing Atapattu after not getting to play a single game at the World Cup gets chopped again.

At least whenever Sri Lanka play next (must be England in October or is it Bangladesh in July) he gets a go. Definitely not against Bangladesh ...As I hope the youngsters get their chance to make Test debuts then.

As Moody has said in the past, its not about the Money, but rather being with his family..

He may go back to WA or take a County Job in England... Depends if he is happy to stay away from his family for long periods over next 4 years...

I cannot understand the selection of Prasanna J either. It would have been much preferable to pick the Under 19 keeper , Silva, who could gradually have been groomed into Sanga's shoes . Prasanna J 's batting's poor and it really is a poor selection given this series would've been ideal to try Silva.

Zoysa did nothing to warrant selection in the Emerging Teams Tri series. At least Perera bowling pretty well at domestic level. Zoysa really has to put some preformances together at domestic level, his no certainty to get picked for SSC these days. Basically his only warrant for selection is past performances and even they weren't that good.

How long has Nuwan Kulasekera been an all-rounder? I was always under the impression he was a pure bowler.

I daresay Marvan Atapattu will retire very shortly, it is obvious that the selectors are unwilling to give him a final fling and he probably doesn't want to hang around for much longer. Prasanna Jayawardene can count himself lucky on being included in the squad, surely there must be a better wicket keeper batsman in Sri Lanka?

Kulesekera not an all rounder, he just can hold a bat down the order. Its just they have to find a way explain thier continual selection of him. Mind you he did score some runs in the Emerging Teams Tri Series.

Atapattu being kept on ice of the England and Australian Test Series IMO

Kaushal Silva is 10 times better keeper/batsmen, but i guess they are trying not to bring him too early to national side, until he improves his keeping. But another season of heavy scoring in the FC comp, he will be pushing for a spot as specialist batsmen.

Kulasekara doesn't seem to be very good from what I have seen of him. The Sri Lankan selectors are generally pretty smart so I'm surprised they keep selecting him, that Ganegama fellow hasn't had too many opportunities recently which is a bit odd.

Makes no sense to not play him in a few ODI's between times, I thought he had retired from Test cricket.

He is only 20 so he has a lot of time to improve, but even amongst some of the more senior wicket keepers in Sri Lanka there should be somebody better. Prasanna Jayawardene is really poor.

The thing with Kulasekara is that he keeps performing at domestic level and had a ok start to his career. Ganegame pretty inconsistent at domestic and A Level. When you watch him bowl, his so much better then Kulasekara, but doesn't seem to put the performances in enough.

I don't think his retired official from Test, just withdrew from some series, so he was still fit for the World Cup if required. I don't think he could last playing ODIs, if he was to play in Tests later. Its really one or the other for him.

Only Lanka De Silva is a better batsmen, out of experienced keepers. But he doesn't always keep these days and is an average keeper. The other keeper all pretty young, or on par with Prasanna with the bat. Prasanna is a good keeper, even though he can't bat, but his batting not much worse then the rest outside Chaith Fernando, De Silva and Silva.

Kulasekera is a decent bat...plays straight, hard to disloge. For example, He got 64 last year, and along with Vaas, they saved the Lankans at Lords by batting for a long period to draw the 1st Test.

Zoysa has had so many chances that its time to move on. The guy has the skills, but like Dilhara, he just cannot perform at a consistent level.

I hope we have seen the end of Ruchira. Better to blood some young guns now than keep going back to these sort of military medium types.

Kulasekera (sp?) was without doubt the most un-penetrable bowler I have ever seen bowl, serious, he was up and down at 75mph. He was probably carrying an injury thought, but he still looked pretty dire tbh.

Zoysa is unlucky not to get selected. Especially considering they'd go for a a guy like Perera who is both an inferior bowler than him and over 30 to boot.

And lol at Farhat getting such a harsh public reprimand and fine for basically just asking why he didn't get selected.

Heres who I'd have for the first ODI:

Sri Lanka XI
1. Tharanga
2. Jayasuriya
3. Warnapura
4. Jayawardene*
5. Silva
6. Dilshan
7. Jayawardene+
8. Maharoof
9. Bandara
10. Fernando
11. Malinga

Warnapura's domestic stats look pretty impressive and his bowling seems to be especially underused. Bandara getting some important match time with the absence of Murali.

Pakistan XI
1. Butt
2. Akmal+
3. Hameed
4. Yousuf
5. Nazir
6. Malik*
7. Afridi
8. Razzaq
9. Sami
10. Gul
11. Asif

You'd think with three specialist openers one wouldn't have to resort to a makeshift but there are good reasons to keep Hameed and Nazir down the order. I felt Hameed could be more useful at the crucial number 3 spot, plus he has played at that spot more of late. Nazir I feel simply lacks both the technique and especially the temperament to be a successful international opener. Instead I'd think he'd be more useful for the Craig McMillan/floater role. Sami is picked for his decent ability as a one day strike bowler, since neither of the other two pace bowlers nor Iftikhar have really proved their wicket taking ability in ODIs.
