Super Eight

Mahmood got hit for four twice off the same ball, thus improving his career E.R

19.2 Mahmood to Smith, FOUR, down the ground and that's that - Smith making short work of the win
Well, matches don't come much more one-sided. That was an emphatic victory by South Africa, making their statement in style. Hall teed up proceedings for them, with a fantastic five-wicket haul and then Smith took them home in dominant, brutal style.

Boos from the crowd for the England side and they head off with heads hanging, as they should. Their performance was no better than abject.

I'll be more upset if Burton albion win tonight tbh.

This is so expected, "meh" doesn't even cover it.

Why? England beat Aus with the same side, they got to the super 8's.. I know England are an underachieving side, but with Pietersen and Flintoff in the side, I don't understand why there is such an air of inevitability about things amongst England fans.. I was seriously expecting Pietersen to hit 90 odd and win for England..

I just don't think we gel as an ODI team tbh, we have no solid bowling or batting plans. Panesar, Mahmood, Bell, Straus, Vaughn, none of them are good enough for International ODIs imho, yet the replacements out there, Dalrymple, Plunkett, Broad, joyce are even worse. It is the batting that frustrates me most, no-one can work the singles around in the middle-overs, which puts pressure on the big hitters who invariably throw it away. Oh for a Fairbrother or a Thorpe. Collingwood doesn't seem to do it in the big games either.

The commonwealth trophy thingy was a fluke, and unless we turf at least 8 of this squad, it will remain so for a very long time.

I think this game underlines how truly huge an upset the CB series was: perhaps the biggest upset in ODI history. England was a truly dire ODI team for many months before the series and they looked completely hopeless in the early games. Then suddenly all out of nowhere they pulled off three consecutive wins against Australia in Australia (when is the last time any team has done this? ). It was astonishing stuff but things have come full circle and they are back to the same crap team that was flogged 5-0 by Sri Lanka.

... the you're even more defeatist than us lot. Anyone who's watched England during this tournament knew exactly what to expect. Apparently they got roundly booed at the end, and quite right too. Not for the first time, complacency (after the CB win) has given way to abject surrender. Neither have any place in a supposedly professional outfit, but we see them all too often from this lot. That being said, all credit to SA, who were awesome.

May I ask why?
It's a stupid cliche, but we have potential, no matter what people say.

Because unlike genuine rubbish ODI sides, we have a team of players who are actually very good cricketers (Mahmood and co excluded). There's no reason as to why we shouldn't be genuine challengers for the WC, except that for some reason, our players never play well in ODIs. There's no reason as to why Bell, Strauss, Collingwood, Pietersen, Flintoff, Anderson, Panesar, Lewis shouldn't be able to perform at ODI level.

Yeah thats true, Collingwood and Vaughan have big test hundreds in Australia, we all know about Pietersen and Flintoff.. Anderson has a hat trick against Pakistan.. It's not like they are totally talentless, just laughably inept

For some totally unknown reason. If the players played like we know they can (ie, in Tests), then they should be around 3rd or 4th in the world.

Good win by South Africa and other than showing England a thing or two about ‘brave’ cricket it was good to see a sense of ruthlessness appear in squad selection in the dropping of their premium fast bowler Makhaya Ntini.

There is a lot of truth in this.

I am going to say it again... I think it's a mental issue. These players are proven international players in the test arena (so we know they can play) just lack the mental know-how to get on with it in ODIs especially when the sweepers go out.

They certainly got a lesson in fearlessness from twatface Graeme Smith today who batted ruthlessly.

Only KP does this and this needs to change because there is far too much pressure on his shoulders currently. Hopefully Tresco will be playing again shortly and he opening with Bell or Strauss (who batted pretty well today) will settle things at the top.

As for Vaughan... oh dear... I think it is responsibility to throw the towel in on his one day career. Collingwood or Strauss now would make adequate captains and this would allow a new face to try and impose himself (Or he could make way for Tresco).

Duncan Fletcher has done wonders for English cricket, especially in the test arena but he is a sitting duck and rightly, imo, should make way for a new coach who could try and solve the wonders of English ODI performances and improve team selection which has at times been laughable at best. I have no idea why Plunkett didn't start a game in this WC (if it is punishment then Freddie should have got the same treatment).

England can now look forward to 4 tests against Windies at home, and should realistically be aiming for comfortable series win, as they are very difficult to beat at home, especially over the length of a series. If England were to lose this series then we really do have issues!

As for the rest of the WC, Australia should beat every side put in front of them from now on, as they seriously look supreme in every aspect and I just can't see any side beating them. Perhaps only Shane Bond and/or Murali stand in their way. Any of the other teams could beat each other imo, and it's anybodies guess who Australia would play in the final.
