Bermuda fight in drawn result
Cricket Web Blue Preseason Cricket
Bermuda gave a pleasant account of themselves in their three-day game against Cricket Web Blue. Despite some exceptional batting by the Blues in spurts, Bermuda managed to fight back from periods of struggle in a drawn result.
Pete Young and Thamba Mamesh got the game off to a cracking start. In the 33 overs before lunch, the Blues mounted 153-1, having been inserted on a good batting surface. Bermuda captain Romaine stated that he expected to see some seam movement early on in the game. That was far from the case though, and Mamesh in particular made sure that it was well-known. His 50 took 45 balls and then he advanced seemlessly to 89 from 79 balls before playing over the top of a Dwayne Leverock arm ball.
In contrast, Young played a very much measured innings. While Mamesh was smashing his three sixes and seven fours, Young was compiling his innings with care and ease. At lunch he scored 54 from 107 balls. Leverock struck quickly after lunch with the wicket of DeSilva for a tame 9. Blue captain Sean Fuller came to the crease in a fit of poor form. As such he joined Young, playing carefully, building his way into good form over the course of his innings of 63. Fuller never looked fully at ease, but certainly appeared in far better shape than he has in the Caribbean to date. Borden dismissed him as he looked to push toward a hundred, bowling a sharp yorker aside from his typical offbreaks.
Fast bowler Kevin Hurdle returned to the attack and dismissed Young immediately. Aside from a chance on 77, it was a fine innings by Young and a welcome 121 in the buildup to the new season. Ben Wilshere too received a life, dropped on 8, but he played a determined innings of 46 not out from the number five spot. Robert Cribb was caught flashing outside offstump and Alex Crampton took his opportunity in the middle, compiling 28 unbeaten. When rain interrupted play on the second day, Fuller called the innings to a close on 404-5.
The fighting spirit shown by Bermuda with the ball was translated in their turn at the crease. Oliver Pitcher fought for 81 balls to score 18 runs and looked constantly strangled by some tight bowling. At the other end of the spectrum, Lionel Cann blasted his first two balls to the boundary, and looked to thoroughly enjoy himself on his way to 99. It would have been a truly deserved hundred had he achieved it, but he was caught out by an excellent spell of old ball bowling by Fuller. Swing was the aim of the Blues, and Fuller and Dunn used reverse swing to great effect late on day two, then Dunn turned to conventional swing with the new ball on day three. Fuller then returned with the old ball and ended the innings at 283 all out.
It was a far more relaxed performance when the Blues took their second turn at the crease. So relaxed that Young, Cribb and Crampton met demise to soft dismissals. Again Mamesh - dropped on 25 - found his dominant stride on his way to 69 off 65 balls. Almost quietly at the other end, Dinu DeSilva played a stunning innings of 118. DeSilva played with total freedom and needed just 122 balls in his effort. His was the standout performance of the innings, especially given the meek score of 253-8 when Fuller declared for the second time in the game.
One over was available before the close of the game, and Matt Smith beat the bat thrice in a sharp maiden.
