This is what annoys people about Kallis. He has proved that he is perfectly capable of maintaning a high strike rate (like now), but too often just doesn't. Quality player when he's in the flow though.
It's also deceptive. Just watching him bat, he never looks like scoring fast, even when he does make runs at a SR>100, like today.

He is the anchor in the side, and he will play that role.

I think the batting is their problem tbh. They don't have a player who will consistently score runs at a good pace, like Ponting, Pietersen, Chanderpaul, Styris, and others like that.
Chanderpaul?

Anyway, despite not scoring quite as quickly as needed by the team at times, Kallis fits the bill. He's really lifted his strike rate of late and when the bowlers do their job, a strike rate in the mid 80s is perfectly acceptable. There's also Smith who's had a good series excluding these last two games. I think the bowling has been more of a problem, actually - for a team that bases its game around restricting teams for less than par scores and then chasing them down with safe batsmen, the bowling has been fairly dissapointing IMO. It was obviously quite dire against Australia, and it was even worse for the most part against Bangladesh. They bowled well against Sri Lanka given but... and that brings me to the my last point - their lower middle order - has failed. Once known as very reliable to up the rate and/or get SA get out of a hole, the lower middle order players such as Prince, Boucher, Kemp and Pollock simply haven't done anything of note at all.

IMO the top order batting has been the equal if not better of Sri Lanka and NZ, but the bowling, which the side has been built around, and the ever-so-vital lower middle order, simply haven't fired.

He has scored reasonably quickly consistency in this tournament though. It's not like he was actually particularly slow against Australia either - he just wasn't able to score at 12 an over against quality bowling.

I don't like the guy but I have to concede this has been a superb display by Kallis.
