World Cup: Bext XI
Go on, you know you want to. Pick an XI based solely on performances over in the Caribbean.
I've taken a few liberties with batting positions to try to stick out the best team, rather than the players who've been performing the best in that particular position:
1. Matthew Hayden (436 runs @ 87.20, SR 107.12)
2. Graeme Smith (344 runs @ 57.33, SR 105.19; 2 wickets @ 48.00, ER 4.80)
3. Sanath Jayasuriya (303 runs @ 50.50, SR 104.48; 5 wickets @ 27.20, ER 3.64)
4. Ricky Ponting* (348 runs @ 69.60, SR 100.00)
5. Michael Clarke (296 runs @ 98.66, SR 102.06)
6. Scott Styris (258 runs @ 129.00, SR 91.48; 8 wickets @ 15.50, ER 3.75)
7. Adam Gilchrist+ (238 runs @ 47.60, SR 94.82)
8. Brad Hogg (12 wickets @ 18.00, ER 4.59; 45 runs, SR 214.28)
9. Shane Bond (8 wickets @ 10.50, ER 2.29)
10. Lasith Malinga (15 wickets @ 14.26, ER 4.93; 2 runs @ 2.00, SR 22.00)
11. Glenn McGrath (15 wickets @ 14.53, ER 4.75)
Several debatable picks there, I suppose. I went for Clarke ahead of KP because of his superior strike rate (which may be doing Big Kev a massive disservice as he's hardly been in a position to tee-off most of the time he's come to the crease) & Hogg gets the nod over Murali for his superior batting. With Jayasuriya & (to a lesser extent) Fat Gray and Clarke there as spinning options too the great man misses out this time. Kallis has also been in the runs, but his figures are quite distorted by his innings against yer Dutch, so I preferred Sanath there.
