Gilchrist has always been more dangerious than Jayasuriya. You always know that when Gilchrist is in the mood you've got a few inches of margin-for-error at best. With Jayasuriya you've got a few areas not to bowl at (short down leg, full down leg, short and wide, full and wide) and a bit more MFE.

If you look at these lists, Jayasuriya's name pops up 7 times as opposed to Gilchrist's 3. Given that Jayasuriya has been doing it for longer, with 3000 more runs, 9 more centuries and a similar ave I don't know whether you can say Gilchrist has always been more dangerous. It's worth arguing though.

Well Jayasuriya's been a ODI opener since 1994, Gilchrist only since 1998.

Not sure dangerousity can be stats-defined, TBH.

Strike rates are obviously the best stats-defined indicator of "dangerousity" (I think you've just invented a new word that could be useful), along with averages. Gilchrist's are both better so that could be the winning goal for you Richard, in a hard fought contest. 3-2 to you

Haha, I think just watching the two in full-flight is a better indication TBH. Gilchrist has 14 or 15 shots that he plays and makes himself pretty darn close to impossible to bowl at. Jayasuriya, magnificent as he can be to behold, mostly plays just 4 strokes - that uppish-Cut, the Coverdrive, the flick-off-the-legs\hip and the Pull.

I just want to ask you guys how many matches have Australia lost when Gilly has scored a century in both test and odi's, i haven't checked the stats on that one but still my guess would be that the aussies might not have lost a single game in which Gilly had scored a ton.

Likewise I imagine if you look at the games in which other keepers have scored tons there'd probably be a similar pattern.

But when Gilly hits a ton(or even a quick 50) he just destroys the opposition and you certainly can't say that about any other keeper in the world.

And when its comes down to his consistency, then he surely had a poor run during the CB series but he is the 2nd leading run getter in the history of Australian odi cricket so he is way ahead of keeper-batsmen of his generation.

Kumar Sankarra and Gilchrist easily the best to wicket keeper batsman and Dhoni next on the list.
McCllum and Boucher to some extent over-rated for mine, you see them play a explosive innings every now and than but usually far too inconsitent.

Thats the first I've heard of Boucher being overrated. Oh come on dude, this man has been on par with Gilchrist in ODIs and he deserves every bit of fame that he gets, if not for wicket keeping record breaking act, then for the number of rescue acts he's pulled late in the innings.

Most effective wicketkeeper/batsmen = Sangakarra
Most exciting batsmen (that can wicketkeep) = Dhoni

I Disagree with the Best wicketkeeper being Boucher. SA have been without a regular spinner for some time now, and thats where keepers are really tested. Gilchrist and Sangakkara have the two best spinners ever bowling at them and so, are sometimes shown up when the doosra/flipper/(whatever other variation) gets bowled at them and their gloves are a foot away from where the ball went. Boucher is a good keeper to fast bowlers, but in the test world series vs. Aus he was completely bamboozled by Murali (as i remember it)

And Gilchrist is without a doubt the most exciting batsman that can wicketkeep.

Guess practice does make perfect, so if he had some decent spinners in his team, I personally think he's learn to deal with them.

About Gilly is that his not really in form, and the question was about this world cup. But if Gilly hits his straps, he'll be the best wicketkeeper entertainer for sure.
