Norwood's on Fire
Key difference being that the AFL is a closed shop, thus it's no need to crown more than one champion: in English football (and in most other football leagues) clubs have the opportunity to "promote" if they finish in a good position in the lower leagues.

The FA Cup is thus a competition where every team (subject to some kind of standards to ensure your average team of 45-plus inbred punters doesn't turn up) plays, in case a good team should suddenly turn up from out of the blue; the League Cup is only for teams from the four top leagues.
Bah, why didn't I say that.

Guess I should have pointed out that in the Championship, and Leagues 1&2 there are finals as such, for the play-offs, to determine who goes up.

FFS. Why was Adebayor sent off? :-O Toure & Mikel were fair enough, but I'd have thought Fabregas had more to worry about than him.

Ah right.

Well you have the leagues (Premiership, Championship, League One (this is the best one), League Two, and then non-league, which goes way down), which are just that, with no finals or anything, and as such the winners are, in my opinion, deserved winners.

Then there's the FA Cup, which the oldest cup competition in football. It starts in August I think, with the preliminary rounds (village teams, teams from the police etc), after the prelims there are four qualifying rounds for non-league teams. Then at round one the lower-league teams join, and at round three the big boys join. It's straight knockout, with a replay if there's a draw, up to the semis, which are played on neutral territory, and the final, which is at Wembley when it exists. basically the FA Cup Final is English football's showpiece event, like the AFL Grand Final is, but it's for a different competition.

The League Cup is basically the same but without the preliminary/qualifying rounds, as only the top 92 can enter, and bigger teams tend to play fringe players in this, as it's a lesser competition.

Hope this makes sense.

And lol at that Arsenal player having to be literally dragged off.

I think Adebayor had something to do with why Bridge was on the floor. Wasn't shown on camera though.

That match was utterly insane. Great to watch, though.

Really hope JT gets well soon, I love the fella and my stomach was churning while he was lying motionless on the ground. Feel so bad for him. :(

Wayne Bridge (after saying how pleased he was to get the 3 points today) said the referee told him that Adebayor was sent off for hitting him.

Only problem is that it wasn't Adebayor - he didn't know exactly who it was though, thought it was the right back.

But you have to remember Lille don't have form or history for instances such as this. I'm not naive enough to suggest it's an anomaly but they didn't have a problem in earlier rounds with crowd trouble and they don't have a particularly bad reputation in France for crowd disturbances.

Personally, I don't think the trouble in Lille was enough for them to warrant a ban, you may suggest where would it end, in Lille's case Tuesday night or the next time a British club comes to town, buys tickets on the black market in parts of the ground designated for Lille fans. It does takes two to tango.
You've missed out altogether all the other stuff Lille have done, the walking off the pitch, the appeal, the inappropriate public comments, the complete failure to accept any responsibility and blaming of others.

Walking off the pitch alone should get a stiff punishment for the coaching staff responsible so that it never happens again.

Oh and nice one CDMs.

For sure and they have improved on the continent but their behaviour in this country still leaves a lot to be desired and what's Lille's rep like in regard to crowd disturbances, not that bad is it? Only when Marseille come to town.
Aren't Mareille's fans a bunch of low IQ fans? Let's face it, only those sort of people riot. Is the rioting supposed to maks that they have a rubbish football team?

 @ David James celebration after saving Nonda's penalty. Although, it would have been more funny if the ref actually applied the laws of the game and allowed Nonda a retake, considering James was at least five yards outside his goal line before Shabani took the spot kick.

But overall good result and if anyone suggests the likes of Sol Campbell and David James should be in the England side, just look at yesterday's game and try to suggest such a thing with a straight face. Both had horror shows and in Campbell's case after his excellent start to the season his performances are now beginning to lax once more.

Arsenal on Wednesday, decent test and be interesting to see how Samba gets on, been good so far (Samuel Vimes :) ).

He looked distinctly average when I saw him play Everton a few weeks back. Flat-footed and clumsy, not to mention several misplaced passes and being beaten to the ball by Cahill in the air on numerous occasions.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt seeing as it was a one-off game early in his Premiership career against a quality side (:p), he seems to have done a decent job in Europe.

Samba was cup tied so he had no part in are two game post Christmas UEFA cup campaign. I've seen Samba about three times now and compared to Henchoz and Andy Todd the guy is more than decent, especially considering he cost only £400,000. Fantastic build and has all the attributes needed for the Premiership. Sure, his no Frank De Boer or Siniša Mihajlović when it comes to ball distribution but his quick, good in the air and likes to come forward. Will doubtlessly be exposed on the higher stage but Rovers haven’t had any pace at the back in years and it’s refreshing to see a player who can actually keep up with the oppositions forwards. And playing alongside Ryan Nelson will only improve his defensive acumen. Did well at the Emirates and it will be good to see how he fairs against the ‘Brady Bunch’ on Wednesday night. By no means I'm I suggesting his great; I'm Blackburn's harshest critic but his ticking all the right boxes for me currently.

Also, Everton a quality side.
