Indian domestic season 2006-07

I had the impression that the Ranji One Day Tournament was going to be played in coloured kit and with a white ball this year.
They were. The Mumbai/Baroda clash was a good match. Baroda were all out for 224, with Powar taking three wickets for 49 runs. He attacked the batsmen, flighting and looping the ball a great deal, unlike the two 'best' ODI spinners, who were only restricting the batsmen. Then, Mumbai lost two early wickets, including prospect Rohit Sharma. Powar came in at four, and smashed 57 rapid runs with five fours and a six. Powar, Jaffer (over 70) and Mazumdar went past 50 and they lost wickets too soon, but swing bolr Wilkin Mota scored the winning runs to take Mumbai home.

There was some action elsewhere, but no prospects in South. All matches in North and Central Zone were rained out.

Mumbai win again, this time in a rain-reduced encounter against Gujarat, 25 overs a side. He took three wickets for 27 and scored a rapid 30. His fielding was impressive again. This was on the back of being left out of the World Cup team. Also, Rohit Sharma scored a rapid 90 in the same encounter to take the team to 195. Gujarat were never in the hunt for the chase, despite Parthiv Patel's 50.

More matches were played down South, but nothing interesting happened in any of them, with no prospects in any team. With Laxman opting out of the Hyderabad side, the South Zone challenge has become a two-horse race, unless Andhra Pradesh can pull off a few upsets.

The choice of venues for this Ranji OD series as well as the timing is good, showing that the scene has improved. We find matches played at venues such as Wankhede, Brabourne, Mohali, Barabati and other ODI venues. Matches are held D/N as well where it is available, and to add some colour to the colourless domestic scene, we have coloured clothing. And of course, white balls. That said, with Maharashtra reeling under a severe power shortage, the West Zone matches could have been played in Gujarat. EDIT: Comments on this?

Mumbai win again. They look the part of clinching the West Zone series and even the all-India ROD. Middle-order batsman Abhishek Nair took six wickets for 28 in an incisive spell to have Saurashtra out cheaply. Wasim Jaffer has been in good form in this series, with a century and a half-century, in ODI conditions, so he can't be all that bad in this form of the game, though way behind Uthappa. Powar's good form continued with bat and ball. Saurashtra, the minnows of this group, were no match for the Ranji champions.

Elsewhere, Baroda defeated Gujarat, with a score over 250 and Yusuf Pathan, the less-famous brother of Irfan Pathan, smashed 93 with 11 fours and two huge sixes. He then turned in ten overs of useful leg-spin to take two for 45 and the Baroda team won the match, as all the bowlers shared the wickets. This, even as the Indian team desperately needs a stock bowler who can also score runs in big hits in the final overs. It's a pity his form throughout the Ranji Trophy was woeful, as he fell out of contention for a national team spot, and he's now overtaken by the less-destructive Piyush Chawla, who's still too raw.

No prospects in the South Zone league, but Jagdeesh of Kerala starred in a match tied with Karnataka, and he's the third-highest run-scorer. Anyway, the top run-scorer so far is long-time Karnataka opener Barrington Rowland, averaging 152 at a strike rate over 90. Badrinath averages over 64 with a strike rate over 80. Interestingly, fifth on the list is Wasim Jaffer, with a 50 and a 100, averaging over 50 with a strike rate a little under 78.

Tenth in the list is Andhra's Sahabuddin, who's also the season's top wicket-taker so far! He averages 38 striking over 91, with a top-score of 71. He also has nine wickets in four matches at an average of 15. Powar is in the top wicket-takers list again, with seven in three matches, and also scores more than a few runs, averaging over 97, striking close to 120. The selectors have erred greatly by leaving him out of the World Cup squad.

I've always thought Rowland and Badrinath were good players as they were professionanals at my cricket club in Glasgow.Really happy for them and hope they get into the full Indian team.

WE HAVE A COUP!!! Maharashtra have defeated Mumbai in the fourth round of the West Zone ROD series and won the Ramakant Desai Trophy, at the zonal leg of the competition. Now both Maharashtra and Mumbai go into the all-India stage. Baroda miss out as they lost to Mumbai and even if they win the next match, they won't get more points. Maharashtra were fielding a very young team, and Mumbai's fielding lapses and multiple no-balls and wides cost them the match. And of course, they opened with a wicketkeeper, and it backfired. This was a tight match, as Maharashtra won with just eleven balls to spare, by one wicket. Elsewhere, Yusuf Pathan's late return to all-round form continued as he took one wicket for 45 bowling ten overs and scored 42 rapid runs with seven hits to the fence.

Hang on... what's happening? Today, a match between Bengal and Orissa at Cuttack got wrapped up faster than a giftwrap at a shop. Supposedly a 50-50 match, the Bengal innings was over in 22 overs, with the loss of six wickets, at 175. Orissa were all out within that period for 165. Bose and Shukla took three wickets each. Look at the CricInfo match page and you'll see no mention of a reduced-overs match. There is a lot of competition in these Eastern or lesser Northern teams, but no prospects.

I've been out of reporting action due to academic commitments again...now that they're off, I'll tell you what I read on the screens. The North Zone OD's have been boring, especially with Joginder Sharma missing the last two matches for Haryana. Ironically, they won those matches. VRV Singh has been taking a few wickets, but no news was there on his pace and he bowled too many no-balls and wides.

In the Central OD's, Railways have been in dreadful form, losing to Rajasthan, UP (expectedly) and MP. JP Yadav has been in the runs and wickets, Bangar has been taking more than a few wickets, but the form of all their batsmen and a few bowlers has been dreadful. It's a pity, first they were relegated to Plate, then failed to make the semis, then this, though they won last year's ROD.

Uttar Pradesh have been in great form. They scored 365 against Vidharba and crushed them by over a hundred runs. Mohammed Kaif has been averaging and striking over 90, with two centuries. Raina was also scoring more than a few at a good rate. It is shocking to find these two excluded while one Dinesh Karthik, neither scoring runs nor taking wickets (not even keeping) makes a World Cup team. Praveen Kumar smashed his way in several good starts for his team, scoring 61 in one match. He's also been taking wickets as a change bowler, without doing much wrong. Piyush Chawla, travelling with the Indian U-19 side, was missing.

In other news, Piyush Chawla took 13 for 63 in three U-19 one-day matches (two against England, one against Malaysia).

Do you expect Chawla to be a regular in the ODI side, post-World Cup? He's got a good chance, as he's a leg-spinner (opposed to offie Harbhajan), can field very well and is also a decent lower-order batsman. In short, an ideal ODI spin selection, except that he may not be an ideal spinner to have in ODI's, although that's a stereotype.

First of all, I think he is well suited to both forms of the game. Powar should return to the national side after the World Cup and Chawla should be given more time to develop. He had a solid debut season but his second season was disappointing; he clearly has room for improvement before he's international-class. This is a perfect opportunity to actually groom a promising talent who can bat, bowl and field well. Besides, we have ample spin options in Harbhajan and Powar for the time being. Guys like Piyush Chawla, Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma and even Suresh Raina should be given at least another year in domestic cricket before being (re)considered for national selection.

Powar may only have four more years as an off-spinner, and if Harbhajan still stays in the side as a frontline spinner, he may struggle to make the XI. Then again, that's a stereotype. But honestly, almost half of the current ODI side is well past it, or isn't yet ready. Moreover, just Harbhajan and Powar won't be enough, and a reserve spinner is needed. That's why some of Chawla, Rohit Sharma, Raina and especially Ishant Sharma and Uthappa should make the XI after the World Cup.

In the ongoing match, both teams have picked six bowling options. Irfan had another bad start, with five overs going for 30 runs. The Indian ODI team will be in trouble. Luckily, West have not one, but two more bowling options, as change seamer Abhishek Nayar (coming in third-change) picked up a late wicket. Irfan is not the only one leaking runs; even opening partner Rakesh Patel and veteran leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule were smashed around by Praveen Kumar, whose opening 50 pushed West severely on the back foot. Then came Ramesh Powar. The Central batsmen had little to respond to some tight, yet aggressive bowling by the World Cup reject, who finished with four wickets for 25 in ten overs. One more mistake by the Chairman of Selectors, taking the team back by more than a few years.

NEO Sports is gone, once again. Worse, it's a Sunday, and nobody's in office at the cable operator's!

Ramesh Powar turning in a brilliant performance in this game.
That's a good thing, and it could have come useful at the World Cup. The form of Irfan is worrying, as it shuts out one very versatile selection going into a match.

Indeed, with the small grounds in the WI I wouldn't like to see India playing 2 spinners but if Irfan can't find some form, then the opportunity of that happening is increased.
