Well... it'd depend on how many teams.

If it was only the top 8, no, certainly not, but that's not how football World Cups work.

? Why?

If the substandard sides go out early, the Cup will be better-quality, because we'll have a Super Eight where every game has a prospect of being competetive.

Don't you want at least one smaller nation to surprise and maybe reach the super 8s?.Bit like the the FA cup where I always support the underdog. They might not be of "better quality" but I'm sure everyone can appreciate when a smaller nation outperforms itself and has a very good run eg Kenya in 2003.

Well, yes, but when such a thing happens IMO it detracts from the event. Regardless of the fact that Kenya just kept going, you still felt before every game a ODI-standard side played against them that "this should be a walkover".

And that, IMO, means such games add far less interest to the competition.

I think the competition is most interesting if the Super Eight consists of the top 8 teams - because even when England are playing you still go into the match thinking there's a 50\50-ish chance.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh.... footy WC...

I'm honestly none too bothered about footy WCs these days, they just detract from the cricket season. So I'm not well placed to comment on whether it detracted from the tournament.

And in my not-too-well-informed memory, they didn't exactly seem to be the worst team in The World, either...

Interesting to hear Lehmann in a recent interview picking England and New Zealand to be the surprise packages in the WC. Pietersen will make a huge difference to England;s chances IMO

They were far from being one of the top 4 sides at that WC, in fact much nearer the bottom 4...
Really?

Why on Earth did they do so well?

(I do also seem to recall France losing to Senegal, or am I getting my tourneys mixed-up?)
