geez, what an weird looking side. With all these late injuries i guess McLaren would have been forced to make some late selections, but Phil Neville @ LB? & what formation is he going to play with that XI?

If he didn't want to try Barry @ LB I don't think it would have been that bad to call up Baines, or even try Richards @ LB, geez anything to keep Neville out.

With all the late injuries my Team for today would have been with a 4-5-1 formation: Foster, G Neville, Ferdinad, Woodgate, Baines, SWP, Carrick, Barry, Lampard, Gerrard, Crouch.

I just hope we don't get embarrased by Spain, cause Mclers has started the year with a shocker of an XI..

Hmm no proper left wing as usual. Dyer needs to play very advanced or it won't work.

McClaren on his way to becoming football's Andy Robinson I feel.
Yeah, agree on both counts. Looking at the team we're either playing Dyer or Fat Frank on the left (both options scare the heck outta me) & McClaren (like Robbo) is a nice man & a decent coach, but has clearly been promoted beyond his ability.

Luckily for the RFU we didn't have to qualify for the Union WC; the FA has no such luxury. Hopefully someone grows some stones & gets rid before our qualification is irreparably buggered.

Robbo also played people out of position, looking at England's team they've got 6 midfielders playing. The fact nobody quite has a clue what formation England are going to play, let alone where so many of the players will play tells you something. McClaren hasn't learn anything from Robbo or the vegetable. Players are being picked on how they've performed in their position for the club, it's stupid to pick them and then have them play a completely different role.

Lampard is the man on the left wing according to BBC...

Edit: In reality he isn't and it's not like Phil Neville is going to push up that often and provide much. Only a matter of time before Spain twig and exploit the situation, oh wait they just did and Morientes hit it into row Z

If McClaren bothered to read this thread we'd have been spared those 45 minutes of completely toothless football. Oh well.

Haha, finally the Italian govt twigs to the fact that Italian football has a serious problem with fascist Ultra groups and bans anyone from watching all football at all but 6 grounds in Italy.

I'm not sure where it is going to go from here to be honest. The clubs aren't being very helpful though. If I was the police, I'd say we aren't doing your matches unless you fall in line and that'd do for them for a while. :p

Oh yeah, and England have been awful. This does remind me of SGE quite a lot in terms of friendlies always being quite dull.

Much better shape second half and they've created a few opportunities, but the passing and control has been rubbish. Wright-Phillips and Owen must be the only shorthouses in the world that have such poor and heavy touches.

Total shower and how on earth can McClaren defend Woodgate’s performance and ludicrously state that it was encouraging. David Villa had him all night and he was at fault for the goal, prat.

Also SWP first touch is a tackle. Thank you and good night.

Would love to defend us against these allegations, but you're right TBH. The majority of our squad these days are either general tossers or genuine scumbags, and we're certainly a pretty piss poor team. Humph.

well i'm willing to give England & McClaren slight sympathy since we lost so many key players so late, but Mclers didn't help the cause with those poor selections & tactics.

Its so shocking that Stevie G & Lamps can't work together in mid-field yo, i was willing to give them one more chance but geez never again.

But once Rooney, the Cole's, Hargreaves etc are back for the Euro qualifiers i expect England to go ok since we did fairly well againts Holland last november with a close to full-strength side.

On Spain damn thats a fine side, i've always admired their style of football, Xavi was brilliant in the centre of the park, Villa who must be one of the top 3 strikers in the world currently really gave the defense a hard time, had an inform Woodgate really on his toes & Capedevilla looked good as well, Del Horno is going to have to work for his spot back. Once they play to potential serious contenders at Euro 2008.

Sorry, but how does one game where Gerrard (who's been fairly decent on the right) was playing in the middle and Lampard (central midfielder) was playing on the left mean anything?

As for doing OK against Holland, were you watching a different game to the rest of us?

We haven't played well for what seems like an eternity, but the most worrying thing is we're playing worse and worse with every game.

Don't really understand the uproar tbh, it's only a meaningless friendly played with nothing like our first-choice team. After all, it was like this after every match with Sven, so nothing's really changed.

Why Phil Neville was playing, though, I have no idea.

Spain were crap. They play an attractive brand of football which has always made them look better than they actually are. England were running a completely farcical, lop-sided load of rubbish in the first half and Spain only created one chance. They created one half-chance in the second half and they scored from it.

I know Spain have never been a top side on merit or the trophy's they have won. They have a few outstanding but very lightweight midfielders but when they come up against a team that is physically stronger and puts pressure on them they really struggle.Think Arsenal who also play like that.
