Ok, am I missing something here?

All the news articles repeat that England need to win BOTH their matches to reach the finals.

As it is, the table now stands like this:

Match 9 of 12 P W L NR T BP Points NRR For Against
Australia 6 6 - - - 3 27 +1.177 1369 / 257.1 1244 / 300
New Zealand 6 2 4 - - 1 9 +0.069 1470 / 300 1442 / 298.3
England 6 1 5 - - - 4 -1.175 1093 / 299.5 1246 / 258.3

England play Australia and New Zealand once more each. Therefore, if they beat EITHER team with a bonus point, and convincingly, their run rate might edge past NZ's and they will be on 9 points as well: that'd put them ahead of NZ and they'd qualify for the final. So if NZ lose to AUS (most likely scenario) and then England thrash NZ in the last game with a bonus point (unlikely but possible), they still have a chance of qualifying - even if they lose to AUS. Is this correct?

The articles I've read say something like 'need to win both their games to be sure of a finals berth.'

Moving on; why do the selectors keep picking Brad Hodge, when he's failed at almost all his ODI chances (admittedly, only 6)? Surely, with the finals already guaranteed, they could select a younger player, or even Watson, now that he's declared himself fit.

correct, but to gain a bonus point you need ur bowling attack to rip through the opposition...or if ur batting team gets over 300+ batting first...which aint gonna hpapen

If not Watson...try Jaques at 3, Cosgrove, Voges, Katich or even...Hopes!
Cosgrove is fat and out form big time, Jaques isnt in the best form,Katich been there done that, Hopes (biggest spud to play international cricket) and they probably feel with the world cup coming up they need an expereinced batsmen who is actually IN FORM.

Voger would have been my replacement for ponting!

Though i would have liked to see voges in action if ponting was not play tomorrow, but you can't really question hodge's selection either. Hodge is in great domestic form, has just scored a fine century to win Victoria, the ford ranger cup in the finals.

What about the first over he kept to? It was awful.

His keeping isn't that bad - it's better than Jones's for example - but it's by no means the best in the world.
I'm sure some nerves came into it. The spotlight is clearly on you when you make your debut as a 36 year old who has a face that just looks like a skull with minimal skin. I'm hardly a Nixon fan (though I do like celebrating his mediocrity, he talks a lot, he wears a mouth guard and the fact he's debuted at 36) but he's a good keeper in my book. I'm not going to say he's the best gloveman in the world or something like that, but whilst Latif can say stupid things, I'd say he has no reason to be biased in this case.

Nixons got the energy in the field that most of the england team lack.
And come on Fletch' Chris Tremlett, hes one of the worst fielders that ive seen, hes worse now than what monty was at the start of his career!!

Hey guys is it official that ponting is not playing in tomorrow's game. In that case i would like to see clarke at no.3 and hodge at 4. I just hope england doesn't bat first in tomorrow's game.

I just wanted to question what has nixon done that read won't have done behind the stumps.

Im not so sure that means they're running scared. Ponting pretty much turns it on every game, he probably would prefer not to rest right now. If anything it shows Australia are confident to give their other batsmen a go.

Watson isn't really fit yet... I think he'd benefit more from a few games for the Bulls than getting back into the Australian system too quickly. I'd definitely pick him for the CH series though.

Cosgrove's form is completely dire. He's lucky South Australia's batting is so bad in general and that they have a few injuries or he wouldn't be in the side.

Jaques's form hasn't been good lately until his last first class game and his his last one day game.. I don't think picking him now would be good really. He needs to cement the form in domestic cricket and not get the message that he can just perform once every fifteen matches and still get selected.

Katich is a good option but I feel he's been blacklisted. His form hasn't really been brilliant either.. not pathetic or anything but nothing that screams "pick me."

Voges is a good call though. I probably would have picked him, or possibly Haddin (who they won't pick for ridiculous reasons.)
