Princey i was talking about modern day world cup cricket. Where you have flat tracks, a white ball(which doesn't assist a fast bowler after 3 or 4 overs) , better bats, complete protective gear. All these things together minimise the effectiveness of a fast bowler in modern times. As for your comments about pidge, do you think stuey clark would have bowled better than him then?

Quite possibly, considering he bowled absolutely rubbish throughout aside from that one over which has been mentioned repeatedly.

I think thats what i was also saying that one over stamped his class. Even fleming agreed that the great man was the difference, with just that one over.

But you said "it was obvious that if McGrath hadn't played, Australia would have lost" (or something to that effect with worse grammar and more nicknames). Considering he bowled 9 crap overs and dropped two catches, I think Australia would have won anyway, because one good over at the death doesn't really make up for it. Hogg or Clark presumably would have done just as well if not better than McGrath.

I have been saying this, and i say it again stuey clark bowls far too many hit-me balls in context to odi cricket.

Agreed, but McGrath bowled 9 overs of them yesterday, so I doubt he would have done much worse really. Plus, the two dropped catches were absolutely crucial.

Princey chill mate!!

Glen McGrath has bowled all his life with the new ball, but at the tail end of his career he is given the ball as a first change so his effectiveness is bound to dip. I think you have got to excuse the catch he dropped because the ball swirled in the air. If we want the best of glen in odi's give him the new ball or be ready more of such performances by him in future games.

In the end you got to understand that yesterday every bowler was below par. The pitch is to be blamed for that really. Glen had an off day, but that one good over from him might have saved those 8 runs , which was our winning margin in the end.
At the age of 36 he will drop some here and there but he is still a pretty decent fielder.

oh please, everyone has bad games.. this is the first time in 6 years McGrath has gone over 60 runs in his 10 overs [so ive been told] and it was a really flat pitch [short balls were sorta staying up there to be hit]... Bracken had a shocker too.. his experience is vital in the WC and it could be a couple of important overs in the death that will win us games in the WC :) we need his cool head
first drop was harsh really, figner tip stuff... second one was bad, but not easy

but yea i like it more when Pigeon has the new ball...coz he sets the tone early.. but oh well Bracken can be a handful too so it doesnt matter i think

Who did what , where, when.... who cares. A cracker of a game under dreadful conditions.
Australia arguably demonstrated what Buchnan feared i.e. that too many easy games had blunted our edge.
NZ on the other hand have used this series to full advantage and are improving every game.

Yeah i agree bracken is very good with the new ball but he can also do the job as the 1st change. Glen is 36 doesn't have the same venom as before so he needs that extra assistance of the new hard ball.

I was wondering if the Kiwis here would rate Oram's innings as one of the best played by a New Zealand batsman.
If he had got us home it would have been up there. The best ever was probably Cairns's 100 in Nairobi to win the Champions Trophy 2000. This innings of Oram's was pretty damn good though and definitely one of the best ODI innings played by a Black Cap for a while

Tait into ODI squad

Shaun Tait
©Getty Images / Cricket AustraliaShaun Tait has been given a chance to impress ahead of the World Cup after being added to Australia's Commonwealth Bank Series squad for the next two matches.

Having missed out on an opportunity to assess Tait in the international arena earlier in this series, selectors have chosen the South Australian speedster ahead of Tasmanian Ben Hilfenhaus, who impressed earlier in the tournament and in the Twenty20 match against England.

"The National Selection Panel are very pleased with the performance of the ODI side to date in the Commonwealth Bank Series and are pleased with the fast bowling group's results so far," said chairman Andrew Hilditch.

"We are taking the opportunity to add Shaun Tait with a view to looking at him ahead of Cricket World Cup squad selection. These next two games form the final opportunity to look at him ahead of World Cup squad selection."

"Ben Hilfenhaus performed well earlier in the series and at that point Shaun was injured. Shaun has made an impressive return from injury and we want to take a further look at him in the international environment."

Tait has eight wickets at an average of 27.6 from five matches in the Ford Ranger Cup this season.

Would like to see him get a game tbh. The only time I've seen him bowl in a one day game was the final last year, and he was amazing in that, and he's hardly been bowling badly recently.

Pup, you are missing my point. I'm not attacking McGrath - I'm not saying he is crap, I'm not saying he should be dropped and I'm not bagging him.

What I am attacking is your comment, that if McGrath didn't play Australia would have lost. It's quite ridiculous given the fact that McGrath had a poor game (you even admitted such!).

Cairns vs Aus in the VB Series, Styris vs Aus in CH Trophy and Fleming vs SA in WC come to mind.
I have fond memories of Crowe's 100* against Australia in the '92 World Cup, as well as Harris' 130 against Australia in the '96 World Cup. I suppose there's been better sub-100 scores, too. Still, it was like Lance Cairns yesterday.

Interesting choice to pick Tait.

I'd say it's a fairly meaningless one as he's not going to displace the current five seamers in the next two months, any more than Ben Hilfenhaus. He's definitely in with a shot post-WC though, and he's always a good bowler to watch.
