Looking at Sami's figures - 70 wickiets from 30 games at an average of over 48, it's inexplicable how he has managed to play so many games.

Smith attacking with a vigour. I think he realizes that sticking around doing nothing isn't going to do anything on this pitch.

Looks like Nazir's making it easy for him to attack, too. If these two can see off Asif, then they should be able to build a big lead even on this wicket.

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
Considering that Inzy has described this test victory as his greatest win as captain (ahead of any victory against India under his reign) its pretty obvious to me how much test cricket means to the players, particularly away series.
One former India player who was in the test side but not the odi side told me that he would rather be in the odi side - tests are not that frequent and one day cricketers get much more spotlight and recognition from the masses, not to forget the ads. I have seen a famous ODI player say on TV that he prefers playing ODI cricket to tests as well. I can go on talking on this but I am at least sure that not all players value tests more than odis. Then, there is a section which values both forms more or less equally.

So I am not quite sure about the cliched players value tests more than odis. It varies depending on the individual and various aspects about the individual - how much is he in the game for money, what kind of game he plays and so many other things.

Well in India, you'll get hell of a lot more recognition and money by playing ODI, thats for sure. One guy (when Kumble) made his ODI comeback after a couple years out said, "I thought he died or something, is he still around?"

He balked when I told him how many wickets he has in tests.

Um, its certainly not a minefield.
It's a dreadful wicket - when guys can just trundle up, roll their arm over and seam the ball all over the place with great carry, things are too far in their favour. Added to the fact that the ball regularly take hunks out of the wicket and the match is highly unlikely to make it into the 4th day and that's just not good enough IMO

For every flat track that yields centuries from every guy and his brother, we need a three day test...just to keep the batsmen in check. You need both once in a while.

Once Mohammad Yousuf and Graeme Smith got their eye in they were able to bat very well, scoring at a pretty high strike rate for Test match cricket yet still looking solid. It's not as bad as people are making it out to be really.

I only saw Smith bat but, in his case, the pitch was irrelevant when you consider that Sami and co dished up half volley after half volley.

Im all in favour of having some spice in the wicket to give fast bowlers encouragement on day one but when fast bowlers start bowling leg-cutters like leg breaks and chunks are flying out of the wicket on a regular basis, you know it's not right.
