The AIS Squad has been announced - looks a pretty strong group for mine

Selectors favour established first-class names

Cullen and Cosgrove head AIS squad list

Australia's desire to turn first-class cricketers into ready-made Test and ODI back-ups has continued with established players dominating this year's Australian Institute of Sport intake. Dan Cullen and Mark Cosgrove, who have already played for Australia, head the 16-man list who will spend nearly five months working with the Centre of Excellence culminating in a tour to India in August.

Last year the Australia selectors moved away from choosing young, relatively untested players as the need to blood future national representatives became apparent. The latest group includes Luke Ronchi, Aaron Heal, Brendan Drew, Ed Cowan, Luke Pomersbach and Craig Philipson, all of whom have established places in their state teams.

Michael Hill and Philip Hughes, both of whom are available for selection in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup, were also offered places. This year's squad will compete in an emerging players tournament at Brisbane in July against teams from South Africa, New Zealand and India's Karnataka State.

Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said the line-up had been chosen carefully to give Australia options in the coming years. "We have selected these players to benefit the short-term and long-term future of Australian cricket and believe we have an even distribution of batsmen and bowlers who are all capable of playing at the next level," he said.

"With the Australian side currently reaching new heights in regards to fielding and fitness we think it is imperative that this next generation of players is exposed to the benefits the Centre of Excellence can provide." Last year's intake featured two players who have made a mark within the Australia team: Ben Hilfenhaus, who made his ODI debut on Sunday, and Adam Voges, who was briefly called into the Test squad when Damien Martyn retired.

"The 2006 AIS scholars are having a tremendous domestic season this year," Hilditch said. "We are confident that this trend will continue as all involved reap the benefits provided through accessing the best cricket coaching and facilities this country has to offer." Hilfenhaus was one of six players offered a part-time place this year, while three development cricketers will attend the centre during school holidays.

AIS squad Mark Cosgrove (SA), Dan Cullen (SA), Ed Cowan (NSW), David Warner (NSW), Philip Hughes (NSW), Craig Philipson (Qld), Grant Sullivan (Qld), Luke Ronchi (WA), Luke Pomersbach (WA), Aaron Heal (WA), Shawn Gillies (WA), Brendan Drew (Tas), Matthew Wade (Tas), Peter Siddle (Vic), Michael Hill (Vic), Aaron Finch (Vic).

Part-time squad Ben Hilfenhaus (Tas), Luke Butterworth (Tas), Cullen Bailey (SA), Shaun Marsh (WA), Moises Henriques (NSW), Andrew McDonald (Vic).

Development squad James Pattinson (Vic), Kumar Sarna (Vic), James Faulkner (Tas).

Complicated

Bit surprised players like Tim Paine and Shaun Marsh didn't make it. Qld rep is abit thin, but Qld doesn't seem to be bringing through many young players at the moment.

Yeah Tim Paine is supposed to be abit of a prospect, i haven't really seen him play though so i have no idea.

I wonder what a part time place entails.

Redbacks are worse than my team, they have huge problems, will have to import players if their 2nd lot can't do better than the first lot.The way the repalcements are going callum fergurson will get repicked very quickley.
Good AIS squad, not as strong as last years bunch tho,i count 5 under 19 players in there good prep for the next world youth cup.
Glad for NSW bollinger back he stiffens the bowling, maybe the lambert thing not working out would like jarrad burke at 7 or even dave warner.Still this game is an improvement for us,maybe next game will be bigger.
The vics tho look on their way for all the titles this year tho, don't know hoq qld will cope without their rep players and with injuries probably not too good.

Went to the WACA today, took some photos, will put a few up when i get to a computer with a memory card reader.

Tait and Cullen actually bowled pretty well today, Rogers looked really good until Cullen came on whom he looked dodgy against, brought up his century with an edge just wide of slip. Gillespie didn't look to threatening. SA's top order effort in the second innings was abject and then Cosgrove looked completely at sea whilst he was out there. He looks fatter in real life as well

Rogers has now made 909 runs for the season in just 10 innings at an average of 90.9 he'd have to be firming for Langer's position.

lol Queensland's top order is a shambles.

Broad, Phillipson and Maher.

Maher averages something like 20 this Summer - not a great Skipper either.

Ronchi? Crosthwaite was already there last year.
Well who ever they think is next in line after Haddin. Consdering they are trying to fast track Cullen and Cosgrove (as well as loss some weight). You would think it would make sence to fast track a player into the national team rather then into FC cricket. Its not like any of these keeper batsmen are going to get county contracts.

Also do you know much about Phillip Hughes, haven't heard much about him. Might look for his name in the grade scorecards in the future.

EDIT: Just noticed Ronchi in the squad, now how stupid do i look.
