That bit of bowling to Dravid was superb, really it doesn't get much better than that.

Ended up being a massive wicket, because had Tendulkar got ANY support from the other end (Mongia gave a bit fair enough) India could have won that match. But bowling like that is simply breathtaking.

Nonsense, it was entirely Tendulkar's fault that India lost that game and provides yet another addition to the catalogue of cases where he has choked and cost India games. 8-)

My all time favourite bowler. Full stop.

I love the man - as a left arm quick myself (though not *quite* in Wasim's class...) he was always the bowler I tried to emulate - the bustling run-up, the whippy action, the electric pace, the ball moving both ways in the air and then doing something off the seam to send even the best of batsmen back to the pavilion barely knowing what had just happened.

I generally got the bustling run-up about right. Sometimes.

The working over he gave Dravid that day (and many others) was something to behold, but I'll always remember that ball he bowled to Alan Lamb in the WC Final in '92 - rivals Warne's Gatting ball as the best delivery I've ever seen bowled. And it's certainly my favourite one to watch over and over again - any definition of "unplayable" should just have a link to that delivery.

He may not have the pure stats (average, strike rate) quite up there with Marshall, Hadlee, Ambrose, McGrath, Donald of the bowlers I've seen in their prime - but the fact remains if I was captain of a mythical XI and could choose the one player, at their very best, that I would most want to watch take the new ball for my team - I would always throw the ball to Wasim Akram.

Wasim's average is excellent. As nightprowler alluded, I meant it in contrast with others like McGrath, Ambrose, Donald and Trueman. Waqar and Shoaib both have a significantly better strike-rate than him.

But this is a Wasim appreciation thread and I knew I'd pick him up before any of the above mentioned bowlers in my team. :p

Not many people talk about it, but I always thought he possessed some good batting talent. His quick-fire thirties and forties played a significant role in several Pakistani wins over the years.

It's a tricky one, that - I'd certainly have the 1989-1994 Waqar in my team ahead of pretty much anyone bar maybe Malcolm Marshall. Yet the 1995-2002 Waqar wasn't really all that good, and I'd have Wasim in ahead of him any day.

Unless, of course, it was the Wasim that turned-up in his last 5 Tests or so. :p

It's a pity about his last five tests - he was pretty impotent against Bangladesh, but against England in Faisalabad, he bowled one of the best spells I have ever seen anybody bowl in Pakistan without getting any wickets. 'twas such a pity. :|

Well wasim for me is the greatest fast bowler i have ever seen. I have not seen any of the west indian greats. But among Donald,Mcgrath,walsh,waqar and ambrose i would certainly put wasim ahead of them not only as cricketer but also as a fast bowler.I remember once ganguly said that during a tri nation series in australia in 19998-1999 wsim came upto him and told him that i will not swing the ball tomorrow i willl just ball fast and in ganguly's opinion that was the best fast balling spell he has ever faced. While watching wasim it seemed as if he simply directed the ball where to land and where to move and the ball just followed its instruction.
