New Zealand should be ashamed of themselves if they lose more than 1 game against this England ODI team in this tournament
I question you, should AUS be ashamed if they lose to NZ?

No team needs to be ashamed. This is cricket.

Cricket is unpredictable

Brad Hodge has been going great guns opening for Victoria, and Michael Clarke has previously done well whilst opening for Australia.
Ye Hodge is an option but isn't this the first season he has opened for VIC?, plus i get the feeling he has blew his chances in the ODI with some not so convincing performances. His future is more with the Test side IMO.

Clarke is definately an option no doubt, but i think the selectors see him more as a middle order option, because in the CT when Katich fell out of favour they could have easily sent him up the order but they went for Watson.

But overall i don't think Hayden will let Australia down..

So Vaughan as Captain, hardly a surprise.

To be fair im really not looking forward to this, our bowling is just going to get completely obliterated. Batting we should be ok with the likes of Collingwood / Pietersen and Flintoff mind.

He was crap in the last world cup, has never been a good ODI bat, is the most overrated fielder in the history of the universe, at least on this board, and he really hasn't been in great relevant form. They finally drop him, twice, rightly so as he's almost as big a ballast at the top as Katich, and now they bring him back on the basis of what? One decent Ranger cup innings, that I saw and it wasn't as good as Jaques' performances against England, one of the teams actually playing in this series.

Now that Martyn retired, the rest of the top six is without par, and won't hurt too bad when Haddin takes over, but they want to bring this albatross back in. For what, the hundred in Melbourne, that was not a one day game, when he can score 150 from 130 bring him back, but at 35 he won't learn anything new. One day cricket is not about walking down the pitch to a seamer, it's about placement and strike rotation and improvisation and calculated assault. The other five know how to do all those things, Hayden doesn't.

He's there because Ponting is fond of him, and not so enamoured of the alternatives, if the quotes from the captain on the sqaud reveal anything. All he's doing there now is robbing younger players of needed experience by taking a position he's never done enough to earn. So the likes of Rogers, Jaques, and the half dozen or so middle order players more capable have to spend another few months in the wilderness before they inevitably replace him. Why not get the guys that are going to be there for the next five years in the team for a tri-series against NZ (not in great nick) and Eng (only consider losing worth the effort if it takes 3 or more days), rather than throw them in the deep end when the world cup comes around and Hayden has to be dropped when the selectors finally see the light, for the third time.
Comparing Hayden and Katich is silly, Katich has trouble hitting singles and rotating the strike - and at the same time doesn't seem to be able to break the field for a boundary that often. Hayden can do both. Katich isn't the worlds greatest fielder either, he has reasonably poor catching technique. Hayden has a great pair of hands, and is particularly useful at slip to the spinners.

Jaques is out of form at the moment - and with Hayden in pretty reasonable touch its not a contest as to who should be picked.

Hayden will have no trouble against these feeble english and NZ attacks,if he does tho don't bother taking him to the world cup.The big point is what happens when watson is fit if hayden's form is poor you would say he would take hayden's position, depending whites' form watson could take whites' place.
The aussies' seem intent now on having a 5 man pace attack, dunno what that means for brad hogg tho,i think he will be a token traveller in the next 3 months.

Interesting to see you call the NZ attack feeble - Bond and Gillespie were the only things about NZ's performance yesterday that weren't.

I agree. Actually, NZ's bowling is stronger than I can remember it. We no longer have to rely on one or two bowlers. It's our batting that is crap!

Not sure who was batting at the time or the bowler but I noticed one over in the Tas Vs Wa 20-20 match went:

6 6 6 6 1 6

thats huge!

Edit - wrong thread meh.

I would have liked to have seen Haddin in the squad as a specialist batsman. He's a gun, who seems to be penalised, in the selection room, because of the fact he can keep wickets (i.e. he is only considered as a keeper).

It was George Bailey (and Di Venuto) facing Voges, he hit two sixes from the first three balls of the next over as well for a personal total of 6 sixes in 8 balls! Insane hitting.

I often wonder why Bailey has failed to get any national recognition as a "next in line", he has scored just as many runs as Birt over the last two seasons and has a much better FC record than Shaun Marsh.

Slip catching to spinners is more or less irrelevant in ODIs. Hayden will probably field in gully in the early overs and then move around the field like everyone else does. The only time he'd be at slip to a spinner would be if the opposition was already on the ropes. He's a good catcher and all, better than Katich, but there's no way he warrants selection based on his fielding. He's no Andrew Symonds.

Also, Hayden's problem in his ODI career has always been that while he can hit boundaries with the field up, his rotation of the strike has always left a lot to be desired, similar to someone like Katich or Michael Vaughan. Again, like Katich, he was fairly consistent in terms of runscoring, but was eventually dropped because he wasn't going on with his starts enough, and his scoring rate didn't justify his inclusion as a pinch hitter. It's a perfectly reasonably comparison IMO.

Realistically he'll probably have a decent series, but there are better OD batsmen in the country who could have come into the team, and people who deserved a chance in the side far more than Hayden.

On the subject of huge scoring overs, I think David Hussey hit 30 in an over against Leicestershire
