Having Symonds at 4 might expose him to the new, swinging & seaming ball, would you want that? Hussey is far better equipped to cope.
Sure, it might, but it'll also give him more of a chance to build an innings. Symonds has thrived since he learned to take the necessary time to build his innings and was moved up to 5. Moving him up to 4 can't hurt. The other option is Clarke, who I'm sure would do well too, but I think Symonds needs the time at the crease more than Clarke or Hussey do, as they tend to be able to go from ball one or play themselves in according to the situation.

Anyway, those 4 to 7 positions in the order can always be fluid according to the situation, but I definitely think Hussey is the best equipped to bat at 6 or 7, as his record shows.

I'd be disappointed if they picked Hayden. He's a decent ODI batsman and all but I think there's better options around who are just as likely to have an impact in the WC and will continue on for years to come. Watson opening in the WC is a reasonable option, but if they put him down to 4 or so I'd go in with Jaques.
But Hayden is the man in form ATM, even if Jaques is the man for the future unfortunately he isn't exactly smoking runs in domestic OD cricket thus shouldn't be picked as yet. But if Hayden fails in the initially part of the ODI series i have no problems with Jaques getting picked.

Symonds should bat at 5. I think it's perfect for him. #4 in ODIs still requires a decent technique in case two early wickets fall and I think Symonds would get owned more often than not to be honest. He does need time at the crease though so he shouldn't bat at #6 or #7.. so #5 is perfectly suited to him.

I think Clarke is in a similar situation to be honest, but he is more adaptable than Symonds as far as I'm concerned. So I'd put him at 4.

That'd leave..

1. Adam Gilchrist
2. Matthew Hayden
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Michael Clarke
5. Andrew Symonds
6. Michael Hussey
7. Cameron White
8. Brett Lee
9. Mitchell Johnson
10. Nathan Bracken
11. Glenn McGrath

I think Clarke/White/Symonds can be an effective spin option by themselves as a combination, negating the need for Hogg. Johnson provides a genuine wicket-taking option in the middle overs - something I think is under-rated in one day cricket.

Hussey at 4 to mirror the test side, like martryn's role was.
I would pick hoggy in the squad and play him on spinners' wkts,i don't see the sense picking cullen or hauritz hoggy proved he can still do it so leave him in the squad.
With voges/white,clarke and symmo gives us the spinning options if we play 4 pacemen.
I would pick white and voges in the squad and have a squad of 14 including stu clark.
Will be interested how rotation goes hayden, gilchrist punter, hussey, clarke, symmo have all played in the tests.Looks as if brad hodge and an another opener maybe klinger will get a few games because neither white nor voges open or bat 3.Brad haddin of course will play 2 games for gilchrist maybe 3 depending how we are going.

Yep that would be my team except I'd have Symonds at 4, Clarke and Hussey can fight it out between each other then.

So long as Katich doesn't open I'm not fussed.

Stuart Clark is a good bowler. Something I think is under-rated in one day cricket.

So we are picking the one day team based on test performances now are we? Okay then, we better rush Langer in.

Hussey deserves his move up to 4,i have no problems with voges and white hitting out at the end both have good finish plans like huss.
Looking at the kiwis bowling lately and the pommes bowling we may not even need the no 7 to come in and bat so it would be a waste to have huss at 7.
Remember at the icc trophy clarke hardly had a bat and i don't think he will get much chance unless he opens in a few games.
I don't see hoggy getting a lot of games,i think we are starting to follow the windies and england era of picking batsmen that can bowl spinners.

At the very least 4 games, then it depends on his recovery can't say more than that.Mid january he is due to play a game with qld,if he is unfit expect him to miss more games.

Watson should be fit and have some match practise by the time Australia plays NZ in the finals.
It will be interesting to see who they bring in to open.
Hayden,Jaques or will they move M.Clarke up like they did against the Windies and Pakistan a few seasons ago?

Darn right you should. Clark has been a consistent performer in this series, noones got after him, hes outshone mcgrath by a long way, id have him in my side over mcgrath any day. Theres no reason langer couldnt play odis, but since hes retiring theres not much point unsettling the top order for him, I could understand if he already had a place in the odi side...

New Zealand should be ashamed of themselves if they lose more than 1 game against this England ODI team in this tournament

Haha. There is really nothing funnier than people that can't tell the difference between test performances and ODI performaces.

Stuart Clark - 25 wickets in 18 ODIs @ 33 (5.5 RPO)
= solid backup, if not a bit over-rated

Mitchell Johnson - 14 wickets in 10 ODIs @ 25.78 (5.15 RPO)
= gun start to ODI career

England aren't a very good one day team in general, but they do have a player or two who could single-handedly win them a match off his own bat/ball, so that's a big call...

Flintoff and Peiterson but both could struggle under pressure.

Indeed they could. But they could also quite easily win a game or two for England if they performed, and I don't think it would something New Zealand should be embarressed about. If Saj Mahmood runs through their top order, on the other hand.. :p

Yes that would be embarrasing.
