Best and worse of 2006?

Actually, I'll add one to my worst list, if I may:

Fans displaying a worrying lack of affection for and knowledge of the game by suggesting that Darrell Hair deserved what he got this year.

Some of the most knowledgeable and passionate posters on this site, not to mention sections in the media, advocated Hair's removal, so quite frankly I don’t see where you’re coming from.

Tbf, we were all under political pressure from the PCB.

Best:

  • Aussies owning South Africa and destroying Graeme Smith
  • India owning SA in the first Test
  • India's first series in in WI for 30+ years
  • Gilly's 56 ball century
  • Hussey/Panesar/Sreesanth

Worst:
  • Fletcher
  • England being horrible in Australia
  • Darrel Hair, the complete moron
  • India playing the script and losing the 2nd Test in SA
Also want to add Asif to the best list. He's going to be one hell of a bowler for a long time.

You'll Never Walk Alone
England's Ashes preparations (and in general, every two-day, twelve-a-side warmup match. The ICC should step in.)
To be fair, that`s the England Management`s fault. They arranged/rearranged less and informal tour matches.

knowledgeable and passionate <> morally justified

Hair did everything he was supposed to do, as specified by the laws of the game. It's hugely worrying that so many fans were duped by the rather simplistic Pakistani PR "machine". That has to be one of the legacies of 2006; a shift of power from those who care about cricket to those who care about themselves and have the media tools to ensure their success.

Haha that's such rubbish though.

I personally was disappointed, even angered at the removal of Hair, but to say that people who wanted him gone show a "worrying lack of affection for and knowledge of the game" is purely ridiculous and would be rather offensive to the many here that do hold that opinion, one which they are more than entitled to.

I certainly don't wish to cause anyone any offence, but I also feel very concerned about the gullibility of all the fans who believe the ruthless pursuit of Hair by the PCB was justified in any way whatsoever.

Nah, most if not all would have formed their opinions before any of the 'evil PCB's brainwashing schemes took place', as is evident when you look back at the millions of threads on the topic.

As I recall, the PCB were talking a lot before anyone else had a chance to say a word on the matter. Anyway, clearly this is not the thread for such a debate.

C- on the brainwashing schemes TBH, didn't work on the great intellects like PottedMustard.

Didn't he say he was talking about Amla but referring to someTHING else?
Yes - I think you might be right there.
Though god knows what 'thing' he was referring to...

You can always rely on Deano for a gem....just like asking Curtly Ambrose to remove his wrist bands all those years ago.....ah the memories.
8-)

Best of 2006
Mick Lewis, Johannesburg, and the ODI series victory over Australia
SA then proceeding to hammer India in the ODI series
Pasag - Gun poster
The continued success of Makhaya Ntini, one of my most admired cricketers
Test Match Special LW198 - Apart from my girlfriend, the one thing I always miss about England
Warriors having a better season than last
Monty Panesar - Decent Bloke

Worst of 2006
Drugs cheats not being banned from the game, Akhtar and Asif, shame on you
Nicky Boje's retirement
Michael Vaughan being injured
Darrell Hair-gate - Horrendous over reactions from all parties, and a black day for cricket
G Smith's poor form
The further decline of Zimbabwean cricket
Sreesanth - Really dislike him

Sreesanth makes it into your yearly dislike? Wow, you must hate the guy. I don't see why. I've always admired guys like Nel and Sreesanth. Just a bit of excitement. When they get owned, its great fun...and when they own others its even better.

I can imagine if I didnt support SA, I'd hate Andre Nel with a passion, so Sreesanth's just a lesser Nel I guess
