Younis refuses captaincy offer

In a bold move today, Pakistani batsman Younis Khan has rejected an offer to lead his side in the limited overs format.

The move comes after Inzamam-ul-Haq retired from ODIs after Pakistan’s shock World Cup exit.

“They offered me the captaincy with full powers. The PCB said they would also be appointing a strong selection committee to back me up, but I refused after thanking them for their offer,” Younis told a Pakistani newspaper.

“I have always given 100% for my country. But when your family gets threatening calls and our effigies are burnt and our pictures put on donkeys, I can’t lead the team in such circumstances. I am still hurt and upset at the sort of hostile reception we have got since returning from the
World Cup.”

Khan also said he is still deciding whether to continue his one-day career or to retire and focus on Test cricket which he labelled as “real cricket”.
