Vaughan steps down as ODI leader
Paul Wood |Michael Vaughan has decided to step down as England’s one-day captain, with immediate effect, but has not retired from the format completely.
The pressure has grown on Vaughan since the below par showing in the World Cup, and with his place in the side also coming under severe scrutiny, he feels the time has come for someone else to take hold of the reins.
Unable throughout his ODI career to replicate his Test form, he sees his prime objective as leading the Test team, with special thoughts inevitably heading towards regaining the Ashes in 2009.
The naming of his successor will be announced, along with the squad for the West Indies one-day series, this Friday, with Paul Collingwood the bookies favourite. Kevin Pietersen is also expected to be in the running.
Collingwood is England’s most experienced one-day performer, and it would be unlikely for him to threaten Vaughan’s leadership at Test level.
Vaughan explained he was eager to form a strong working relationship with whoever was to step into his shoes.
As an ODI captain, his record has never reached the heights that he has achieved in the longer format. In the 60 games he has led the Three Lions, he has enjoyed 32 victories with 22 defeats.
