Uncapped Duffin to lead Zimbabwe

Though yet to play a One Day International, 23-year-old Terry Duffin has been appointed the new captain of Zimbabwe, and will lead his country against Kenya in the upcoming 5-match ODI series.

Duffin, an opening batsman with 2 Tests and 80 runs to his name, will debut on Saturday at Bulawayo following the surprise decision by Zimbabwe Cricket. The left-handed Duffin has played just 35 First class matches – 28.90 average – and 27 List-A matches – 25.68 average.

He leads a 15-man squad which contains two Under-19 cricketers – Ryan Higgins and Keegan Meth. Joining them are fellow uncapped cricketers, Piet Rinke and Gregory Strydom. The former is an allrounder who bowls fast-medium, whilst Strydom has built a reputation as one of the biggest hitters in the country.

Andy Blignaut has not been selected to the squad, after he refused to make himself available until he is paid in full for his services in 2005. Blignaut was largely touted as the next Zimbabwe captain, standing as a veteran in the current international set-up. He will continue to play club cricket in South Africa.

Hamilton Masakadza has been included in the squad, though he declined a contract on the basis of wishing to further pursue his academic career. Captain of the Under-19 side, Sean Williams has not been picked and declined a contract offer from ZC.
