Trescothick heads home

England Test opener Marcus Trescothick is heading back to England and will miss The Ashes due to a recurrence of his stress-related illness.

Discussions with team management and medical staff were had and it was agreed within all involved that he should fly home as soon as possible.

England coach Duncan Fletcher told reporters that “we are naturally disappointed to lose a player of his quality from our Ashes squad”.

“Everyone in the dressing room hopes that he is able to make a full recovery and resume his cricketing career,” Fletcher added.

Trescothick had struggled in the tour to date scoring only two runs against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra and eight runs against New South Wales in Sydney.
