Tikolo ton gives Kenya 3-0 win
George Roberts |Kenya reasserted their status as the biggest fish in the ICC-sponsored minnow pond with a crushing 104-run victory over Bermuda in Mombasa to complete a whitewash in the three-match ODI series. Steve Tikolo again produced a reminder of his sheer class by weighing in with a 98-ball 111, while there was also another encouraging display by 19-year-old Tanmay Mishra.
Having chosen to bat first, Kenya suffered an early blow when David Obuya fell in the fourth over, but were comfortably in control from that point onwards. Maurice Ouma (47) and Malhar Patel (25) consolidated to 68 until the latter was caught behind, but that only sounded the arrival of Tikolo. 30 overs and five balls later he had racked up his second ODI hundred (his only previous had come against Zimbabwe in Bangladesh in 1998-99), clattered nine fours and a six, and shared a fourth wicket stand of 117 with Mishra (44). A recently threadbare middle-order now looks to have been thoroughly revived, with Mishra now occupying the role left vacant by the departure of Maurice Odumbe with considerable maturity. He, along with the confidence-boosting and self-assuring margin of victory, is surely the brightest thing to come out of this brief series. To compound matters for Bermuda, Thomas Odoyo clattered 35 from just nineteen balls to take the score to 305 for eight, five of which fell to the left-arm spin of Dwayne Leverock.
Odoyo then stunted the Bermuda reply from the off, whipping out two of the top three inside his opening two overs. Dean Minors (68) and captain Irvine Romaine (43) then rebuilt with a partnership of 98, but were tied down by the spin of the impressive Hiren Varaiya and the required rate soared. Useful knocks from Janeiro Tucker (36) and adopted Bermudan David Hemp (25) gave the total some degree of respectability against a disciplined Kenyan attack which conceded just two wides. The tourists eventually finished well adrift of the Kenyan total on 201-6.
