Streak quits Zimbabwe cricket

Former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak may have played his last game for his country, having decided not to sign a new contract with Zimbabwe Cricket and take up a captaincy position with English county side Warwickshire for two years, amid rumours that grown tired of in-fighting in Zimbabwe Cricket.

Streak has played for Warwickshire for the last two English summers, and although not ruling out an international return altogether has made it clear that his immediate future lies at Edgbaston.

Streak was one of the many senior players to quit Zimbabwe cricket in early 2004 when a dispute with the national team selectors reached such a level that many players felt they could no longer continue and left the country to play in domestic competitions around the world. But Streak, like Craig Wishart and Andy Blignaut, returned to the side this year and Streak was made vice-captain almost immediately.

There are rumours that he has once again become disenchanted with the running of Zimbabwe Cricket and with the lifestyle associated with county cricket in England, compared to the pressure associated with being a senior member in a side that is failing to perform, Streak can not be blamed for the decision he has made.

A player of Streak’s ability and experience is a valuable asset, and Streak can be expected to serve the county well both as player and captain.
