Smith leads Windies charge

The West Indian batsmen dominated a rain-shortened day at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane, as they closed the second day of their four-day tour match at 252/3.

Only 62.2 overs were bowled in the day, after rain delayed the start, then bad light hastened the end. However, there was still enough time for Devon Smith and Chris Gayle to bat themselves into impressive form. Smith scored an authoritative 115, striking 21 fours in the 197-ball knock. Having been dropped by Martin Love on 43, Smith ensured he maximized his opportunity.

Gayle contributed 58 (containing 10 fours), and the two added 130 for the first wicket, before Ryan Le Loux broke through. Vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan replaced Gayle at the crease, and scored a quickfire 37, facing just 32 balls and hitting 6 fours and a six.

Symonds and Simpson ultimately dealt with Sarwan and Smith respectively, but Marlon Samuels (20 not out) and captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul (11 not out) batted well to the close. Brian Lara is scheduled to bat next, as he was moved down the order due to a minor injury sustained whilst dropping a slips catch on day one.

He is expected to be fit to bat on day three.
