Shastri could succeed Chappell
Alex Crampton |Ravi Shastri has been offered the role of India coach, and could be in charge for their tour of Bangladesh.
The offer was first reported on Indian television, and was later confirmed by the BCCI. Shastri is currently working for television station ESPN-Star as a commentator, and has asked the BCCI for a day to clear contractual obligations and commitments. He seemed to be keen on the role, saying: “It would be an honour to serve Indian cricket.”
Shastri has only been offered the job on an interim basis however, for India’s tour of Bangladesh. It was also reported, but not confirmed, that former all rounder Robin Singh could take up an assistant coach’s role.
Shastri was suggested as coach at an emergency BCCI meeting, attended by seven former captains, including Shastri himself, and board officials. The meeting was to discuss India’s early exit from the World Cup, and the performance of Greg Chappell as coach, who has now left the position.
As a player, Shastri was an all rounder who played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India, including leading them on one occasion. After retirement he became a successful TV commentator.
