Indian police question Gibbs

Indian police questioned Herschelle Gibbs earlier today about his involvement in the match fixing case during South Africa’s tour in 2000.

Gibbs admitted to police to receiving two offers to underperform in exchange for money that he received from his captain at the time Hansie Cronje.

Ranjit Narayan, the Delhi police joint commissioner did not comment on whether Gibbs had accepted the offer or not.

Indian police charged Hansie Cronje and team-mates Gibbs, Nicky Boje and Pieter Strydom with “cheating, fraud and criminal conspiracy related to match-fixing and betting” in 2000.

Cronje was banned from cricket for life while Gibbs was suspended for six months.

Gibbs had not toured India since the event after fears of being detained by police.

Narayan said following the meeting with Gibbs along with his lawyer and the South African high commissioner that “all loopholes and gaps have been filled” and “now the investigation can move forward.”

Gibbs is available to play in South Africa’s first match in the Champions Trophy against New Zealand on 16th October.
