Billionaire gives US$100 million

US billionaire Allen Stanford has given West Indies Cricket US$100 million in an attempt he says to bring West Indies cricket into the 21st Century.

Stanford said that most of the money would go into grassroots cricket in preparation for the second West Indies Twenty20 cricket tournament next year.

21 teams in total including Cuba and Turks and Caicos will play for first prize winnings of $US1 million.

Stanford told Reuters “This won’t be just cricket, this will be a life-changing experience. We can’t wait two decades to regain the golden era of West Indies cricket. We are stuck in the 1950s and 60s. We can’t allow ourselves to stay stuck forever. We have to come into the 21st century.”

Stanford went onto say “I have committed my resources and I believe that within five years we’ll have a world-beating West Indies team again.”
