Ashes fought off the field too
Richard Edmunds |Although the first battle that comes to mind when thinking about the 2006-07 Ashes series is that between the teams on the field, there’s another vital battle that takes place off it – that of the supporters.
With an estimated 40,000 English supporters invading Australian cricket grounds in the upcoming Ashes tour and vociferously supporting the visitors, there is concern in some quarters that the home advantage may be slightly nullified by the Barmy Army’s presence. From this comes the “Go Off in Green and Gold” campaign.
The campaign, clearly in response and opposition to the Barmy Army, encourages Australians to wear green and gold to matches this summer to show their support. Not only that but the grounds will be adorned with green and gold silks and supporters will enter the ground on a green carpet.
