Aging Aussies worry Lillee
Michelle Hamberger |The current Australian cricket team is fast becoming the Rolling Stones of the cricket world. The debate over the ‘aging Aussies’ has been rekindled by former Test fast bowler Dennis Lillee.
Half the regular Australian team are over 35 – Shane Warne is 37, Glenn McGrath is 36 and Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Damien Martyn and Justin Langer are all 35.
Lillee commented “Even the greatest players get tapped on the shoulder by Father Time at some stage.”
Shane Warne on the other hand strongly disagrees with Lillee. “The age only comes into it if you are not performing,” said Warne.
“We’ve performed pretty well, this group of players, for a period of time. Since the Ashes we’ve won 11 out of 12 Tests so I think we’ve been performing OK.”
Writing in the West Australian newspaper, Lillee said: “Mark my word, the England pace attack, mentally buoyed and on faster Australian wickets, will this summer be at their absolute peak age-wise.”
