Dravid resigns from captaincy

Rahul Dravid, one of the worlds best batsman, has resigned from the post as Indian captain with immediate effect. In a letter written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he has asked to be relieved of his position before Australia embark on their of India later this month.

Dravid’s record as Indian captain was impressive, especially in the Test arena where he lead India to series wins against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies and England and improved their away record significantly. As captain he averaged 51.54 in Test cricket and 42.17 in ODI’s.

Dravid is not part of the Twenty20 squad in South Africa, with Mahendra Singh Dhoni being handed the captaincy for the World Cup.

Currently there are a number of candidates, with Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni himself all in the running. The decision to name Dravid’s successor will be made on September 18th, when the ODI squad for Australia is named.
