Harmison ruled out of first Test

Speculation last week that Steve Harmison would miss the first Test against India with a hernia problem has proved to be correct, with the bowler today being ruled out of Thursday’s match.

Harmison had intended to play on with the injury, having the required operation after the Test series, but a recent aggravation during a county match meant the fast bowler had to be ruled out of the 13 man squad with Hampshire’s uncapped Chris Tremlett called up as a replacement.

“Chris performed well in the recent England Lions tour match against India and his inclusion will give us additional options when we come to decide on our starting XI for Thursday,” said English chairman of selectors, David Graveney.

England’s first Test against India starts on Thursday at Lord’s.
