Sehwag snubbed by selectors

India have named their squad for the tour of the UK later this month with some notable omissions, including batsman Virender Sehwag being left out of both the Test and ODI squads.

Munaf Patel was also surprisingly left out of the touring squad, despite being ruled fit for selection earlier this week.

Sehwag has been out of form with the bat for some time now, averaging just under 15 in Tests during his side’s recent tour of South Africa and even though he has shown signs of returning to his best in the shorter form of the game, Indian selectors have decided not to go with the opener in that format either.

Harbhajan Singh was also left out of both squads after a poor run in one-day cricket, with selectors choosing the experienced and ever-reliable Anil Kumble to fulfil the spin duties.

Ranadeb Bose will make his way into the Test squad as well as batsman Rohit Sharma who will have the chance to make his international debut during India’s one-day series in Belfast.

Rahul Dravid will continue to lead both Indian sides, which will begin their campaign with a five match ODI series in Ireland starting next Saturday. They will then head over to England for three Tests and seven ODIs. The squad for the one-day matches is yet to be announced.

Following the surprise withdrawal of Graham Ford from the role as head coach of India, the BCCI have appointed a manager to take care of affairs in the UK, former batsman Chandu Borde, as they continue the search for a national coach.

Indian ODI squad: Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Ramesh Powar, Ajit Agarkar, Piyush Chawla, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Sreesanth.

Indian Test squad: Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ramesh Powar, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, RP Singh, Ishant Sharma, Ranadeb Bose.
