Blewett pushed into retirement

Greg Blewett has been forced into retirement by the South Australia Cricket Board with them not guaranteeing him a starting place next year.

Blewett who is 35 years of age told Fox Sports that “it was made pretty clear to me that it didn’t matter what happened, they weren’t going to select me. So the thought of doing a pre-season and training again without any real chance of playing first-class cricket didn’t appeal to me.”

Blewett who played 46 Tests and 32 one-day internationals between 1995 and 2000 said he was going to move into commentary with Fox Sports and hopefully do some coaching with South Australia.

Blewett himself down played his Test career saying “I probably underachieved a little bit for Australia, but at the same time, I was trying as hard as I could along the way – it’s just the way things panned out.”

The chief executive of South Australia Mike Deare wished Blewett all the best saying “Greg has been an outstanding ambassador for cricket in South Australia and was a very valuable member of both the Redbacks and the Australian squads for more than 15 years. We certainly wish him well with his post-cricket career opportunities.”
