Watson Eyes Test Opener Berth

Watson, who has opened at One Day International level for Australia and averages over 40 in that position, has also batted in the top order for both Tasmania and Queensland in the Pura Cup.

“There is a major opportunity at the moment at the top of the order, and I definitely believe I have got the game and the technique to do the job,” Watson told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I have had a chat with a few people about it, although nothing concrete was agreed on. I just said that there is an opportunity there after Justin’s retirement and I’d like to put my hand up.

“I know I can bat up the top of the order. I’ve done it for Tasmania, Queensland and for the Australian one-day side. Like anything in life, you see where opportunities are and you go for them. Obviously I missed a big opportunity last summer, and I’m keen to make the most of opportunities now.”

Western Australia’s Chris Rogers and New South Wales’ Phil Jaques were thought to be involved in a two-way shoot out to replace Langer, however, were Watson to be promoted to the top of the order the Test side would have greater flexibility, as both he and Andrew Symonds could play as all rounders.

With the retirements of Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, Australia’s attack will have an unfamiliar look to it next summer. Were both Watson and Symonds to play, the pressure on Stuart Clark and Brett Lee would no doubt be eased.
