Aussies smack Ireland

The Australians looked in ominous form after smacking Ireland by nine wickets in their ‘Super 8’ clash, reaching the target of 92 in less than 13 overs.

After winning the toss and inserting Ireland on a seaming pitch, Australia seemed odds on to crush the World Cup debutants.

Australia’s opening bowlers Glenn McGrath and Shaun Tait used the conditions perfectly having the Irish 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 12-4 and ideas of Australia dismissing the Irish team for the lowest score in World Cup history (36 by Canada v Sri Lanka in 2003) seemed a distinct possibility.

However Ireland led by their captain Trent Johnston (17) and John Mooney (23) managed to avoid this dreaded record to compile 91, this was still the 10th lowest score in World Cup history, and was unlikely to test the Australian batsman.

This proved this case with an elevated Mike Hussey smashing a six to finish the game in just 12.2 overs.

Australia showed no mercy in this match by only using their front line bowlers and never releasing the pressure at any time during the match.

Australian retiring champion McGrath stating that “he hoped he would not need his batting pads for the rest of the tournament”. If this wish comes to fruition Australia will more than likely become the first nation to ever win three consecutive World Cups.
