Gibbs struggling for WIndies clash
James Nixon |South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs is struggling to be fit for their next match against the West Indies in Grenada on Tuesday due to straining his left calf muscle during their last match against Bangladesh on Sunday.
South African coach Mickey Arthur told a press conference that they would give the middle-order batsman until the last minute to prove his fitness with the match against the West Indies being key to South Africa’s progress in the tournament.
“If the risk was on the positive side, if he had a 60-40 chance of playing, I’m sure we would look to give him a go. But he’s got to get through 50 overs in the field and he’s got to run between the wickets,” Arthur said.
Arthur commented that if Gibbs is ruled out, AB de Villiers would move down the order, with Loots Bosman coming in to partner captain Graeme Smith at the top of the order.
