Murder feared in Woolmer tragedy

The tragic circumstances surrounding Bob Woolmer’s death may have taken a turn for the sinister, as police believe that the Pakistan coach may have been murdered.

The initial belief was that Woolmer suffered a heart attack that led to his death, and that the was the official line from his family. An autopsy performed on Tuesday morning proved inconclusive and the cause of death is still unclear.

However, there are unconfirmed reports of marks discovered on Woolmer’s neck that led to suspicions of foul play. Deputy commissioner and chief investigator, Mark Shields commented on the investigation.

“After further discussions with the medical team and our colleagues we are now treating the death as suspicious,” said Shields, “We have reviewed the circumstances and it would be inappropriate to say anything now. We are waiting for the pathologist’s reports.”

Speaking to AFP, PCB spokesman Pervez Mir said, “The police suspect that Woolmer may have been murdered. They have started an investigation.”

However, Team manager Talat Ali was less willing to engage the suspicions. He told Geo TV, “There is no information at all that this poison could be involved. Investigations will carry on so we cannot come to any conclusions right now.”

Reports have suggested that the Pakistan team may be restricted in travel, due to police questioning and the ongoing investigation. But Ali has denied the claim, saying that the team is still expected to leave Jamaica on Saturday.

Woolmer was found unconscious in his hotel room on Sunday morning, some 36 hours after his team lost to Ireland to be eliminated from the World Cup. He was rushed to hospital and passed away two hours after.
