Police strike looms in T&T

Cricket officials have been rocked by the possibility of a police strike taking place in Trinidad and Tobago with the World Cup less than two weeks away.

The police officers, who want a pay rise and better working conditions, may walk out on the World Cup, in a group that contains India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bermuda.

The move comes as Police Commissioner Trevor Paul announced earlier in the week, that officers assigned to the World Cup will not receive any extra wages for their efforts.

“It is time to draw the line,” said Cedric Neptune, president of the Police Social and Welfare Association.

“People are not fully appreciative of the extent of work involved with this particular World Cup in terms of all the escorts and security details.

“Our police officers are saying it has always been that we are paid for extra duty and don’t come now and tell us we are not being paid for extra duty.”
