Sri Lankan coach Tom Moody would be very interested in coaching England should the position become vacant, his Worcestershire CEO Mark Newton has revealed.

Moody, who recently ruled himself out of contention as the successor to outgoing Australian coach John Buchanan, is seen as the firm favourite to replace embattled coach Duncan Fletcher at England.

“He is very knowledgeable about English cricket and] was a World Cup winner twice, ” Newton told the BBC.

“He has clearly turned around Sri Lanka’s one-day fortunes and realistically they go into the World Cup with as good a chance as any team – apart from Australia – of winning the thing.

“Tom’s had a huge influence on the mentality of the team and how they approach one-day cricket.

“He is a very good coach, particularly at working with talented players.

“He does not over-rely on computer stats and so on. He still very much believes in the basics of cricket but if there’s a plan of action or a way of playing he’ll want it done that way. He’s also a very good man manager.”

Former England great Ian Botham also endorsed Moody for the role, saying he would be a perfect replacement for Fletcher, who he said should stand down from his position after the World Cup.

“Next month’s World Cup in the Caribbean marks the end of a natural four-year cycle, and I expect England to start next summer against West Indies under new management, preferably with Tom Moody running the show,” Botham wrote in the Daily Mirror

“Moody may be an Aussie, but he is innovative, dynamic and he’s done an excellent job in charge of Sri Lanka.

“I only hope Lord’s have the guts to employ him.”

Moody’s Sri Lankan contract expires at the end of the World Cup.
